Cleveland Browns show no negotiating skills in trade of Trent Richardson

don't know why they Drafted him #3 over all in the first place the fact that they got a #1 back for him IMO was a good move, im sure Trent Richardson will do much better then 3.5 yards per att with the colts but still Drafting any RB in todays NFL higher then top 20 is crazy

Maybe they know that Richardson is an injury prone guy who is never going to live up to close to what his draft position indicated and were willing to unload him before the rest of the NFL caught on. Richardson has yet to show that he is worth a 3rd rounder never mind a first rounder.

Cleveland Browns initiated the trade that sent Trent Richardson to Indianapolis Colts for 2014 first-round pick | cleveland.com

The Browns initiated the trade that sent running back Trent Richardson to the Indianapolis Colts for a first round pick in 2014, several league sources have told cleveland.com.

The trade has touched off a firestorm of criticism from Browns fans, but CEO Joe Banner said Wednesday night that the deal was more about getting good value and positioning the Browns for the future than anything negative about Richardson.

The Browns will most likely use one of their top pick in the first round on a quarterback. Or, they can package the picks and move up to get their man.

Finding a championship-caliber quarterback is job No. 1 for the Browns, and now they're in position to get their man in this draft. Overall, they have 10 picks in the 2014 draft.

The Colts agreed to give up their first-round pick because they lost running back Vick Ballard for the season to a torn ACL.

So they initiated the deal, which typically means that they would have less leverage, and still got a 1st round pick?

If you ask me the Colts are the ones who are bad negotiators.

This thread reminds me to start another thread soon, which is a retrospective on passing over Mark Ingram for a first the next year (Chandler Jones) and a second that year (Shane Vereen.) I figure two University of Alabama busts should show that championship pedigree in the college ranks does not translate into the NFL.

I do recall how heated that debate was, with your typical knee jerk fans on here about to blow a gasket because we passed on supposedly the next Barry Sanders.

Whilst I do agree with the OP in theory, I am reminded of the quote "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush." Sometimes, you take what you want not what you could get.

It's reasonable to see this deal as a win win situation for the Colts and Browns.

Starting to think that Alabama RBs are kinda like USC QBs - yes, they put up outrageous stats in college, but how much does that really translate to the NFL, when they're doing it largely because they're surrounded by superior talent.

How many 1st-3rd round picks did Richardson and Ingram run behind at Alabama?

I'd trade Mallet straight up for TJ Ward
