I celebrated losing out on Ridley.

He is not what the Pats need for that much money.
I was going to respond the same way but read through the comments first
I wanted no part of Ridley. Especially for that kind of money
I did not want him for 14 million. When I heard 23 million, I breathed a sigh of relief

Believe me we need a X-WR.
But that would have tied up a lot of cap space for a guy who is a bit ****oo

Great news.
They have so much cap space. Would be great to use some roster bonus (recognized up front) rather than signing bonus (recognized over the future) with deals like this.
Good player. Sure, some risk. But it's not our money, and every deal can be restructured. Relatively low guarantees. Sounds great.
Yep, in particular we wait to see what other teams cap casualties are, then restructure as needed.

FA is not a simple equation of bid the most and sign the player. Never forget that these are HIGHLY competitive guys. WINNING is very important to them in making a decision.

The kind of guy who you want to play for you will almost always take the $20MM/yr. deal to play for a contender over say the $23MM/ deal to play for a rebuilding team.

Remember, with the kind of $ these guys make these days, by the time they get to FA, they are already financially secure with several million in the bank.

It actually seems to be pretty simple. And its directly from the mouths of players and agents, when every year people (mediots&fans) are surprised why top players take deals with bad teams..

Of the top 10 contracts in this FA, only 2 went to the playoffs teams and it was hardly for the ring chasing..

You always need trench guys. Nobody is disputing that. But you also can't dispute this is a LOT of money to pay to a guy who is coming off his first big year of production.
Production meaning sacks maybe, he's been one of the most double teamed defensive tackles since he entered the league as a rookie and he's only 25.

DT's do a lot more than rush the passer, our run defense has only gotten better and better the last three years. Last year the Pat's D gave up the 4th fewest rushing yards in the NFL and ranked #1 in fewest rush yards per attempt... arguably the best run defense in the league.

None.

He would have traded 3 for 11 and 23

Drafted McCarthy at 11
Traded 23 to the Lions for 29 & 73
Drafted Cooper Dejean at 29
Drafted Jer'Zhan Newton at 34
Drafted Dominick Puni at 68

Dugger, Barmore and Ownenu replaced.
I think Ownenu would have left.

Not sure about Dugger and Barmore.

It's only rare cases where someone like Cousins perhaps gets overpaid, but again, that only happens when the team wants it to happen.

Cousins bet on himself and won, good for him. I'll never begrudge any NFL player for beating the system that's designed to beat them. That said, Cousins once again (to the surprise of no one) went for the money. This time in Atl. He's one hypocritical bastard having his nose out of joint because the team drafted Penix, he'll still get paid. Man will he get P-A-I-D. Dude should just smile at the money truck and STFU

Funny thing is that Cousins will probably get another bite of the apple two years from now when ATL can finally afford to cut him.

We all know where he'll end up, he's absolutely gotta be a Jete before he retires, and they're really good at paying big bucks to vets past their prime.

Meanwhile Penix is one of the older players to be drafted and will probably sit another two years.

Why does my spell checker keep telling me I'm spelling Penix incorrectly?

Good news.

Man this site is incredibly slow for me these past few days.

Great news, elite player.

Agreed. Feels good to see our team retain it's own players. The FA market wasn't as desirable this off season. So I feel like the took the right approach. Sign your own guys and draft. Barmore is a top 5 D lineman in the league glad he was rewarded.

Agree completely. These are the signings that will never dredited, but are essential to team building. 3 of their best young players are now in the fold for the next 4-5 years. Great job by Wolf getting these deals done.

Wolf says "I heard some of you baby *****es had something to say about my draft picks, well shut your mouths and have some of this Barmore extension"
Is he a tween girl?

So the 2nd largest contract in Pats history will never be dredited. I find that hard to believe.

Absolutely. I've posted that Wolfe and the new regime aren't getting enough credit. Of course no one can every replace what Bill did. However to your point team building and learning and understanding your players, allowing them to grow as men and become leaders that factor along with the talent of course is what makes a complete NFL player these days.

This is an important point. The goal of this season should be creating the impression that THIS is a team that is "on the upswing".

Wins, IMHO are less important than being seen as being well coached and, more importantly, COMPETITIVE., even with a somewhat less than ideal roster.

If they just do that, then this will be a place where FA's will be willing to come to.
Not to be simply contrarian on you Ken; but when I think back on the last 40+ years of my football observations: The big-Name/hi$-value guys who (say /we can infer) they are

1. „re-signing with own team for less (in order to win-loyalty-whatever)“:15%
2. „signing w a new team clearly for the money“ 70%
3. signing w a new team for geography/other reason (than $ or money):10%
4. „signing w a new team for less in order to win“: 5%

So, I don’t see the change as enough to make it a DECIDING factor; it maybe takes NEP out of the first cut group; but they will still have to sell it-principally w cash.

GM’s get credit and blame for draft picks and free agents they bring in to a team, you never hear anyone talk about players of their own that they re-sign. That’s not specific to Wolf or football, it’s just a fact of life in sports. But they do get blamed for letting them get away.

Nice breakdown, this is a good way to look at FA. With a few exceptions I don't want the team to invest in players who are purely motivated by money. Not only do they cost a lot, it is likely that those players will stop working as hard because they got their money. While not the deciding factor, the chance to win does play a part for players looking to take market value for a situation that they prefer vs setting the market at their position, call it class 2.5. For discussion purposes, 25% of players fit this mold. With 20% from classification 2 and 5% from 3. Class 4 is for older players who have already made their money looking for a last shot to win.

I was having fun with your typo.

But clearly it's not "never hear anyone talk about players" signing with their own team, otherwise, this thread doesn't exist.
