Chris Long signs with Eagles

Thought he'd sign with a contender again, but maybe the others weren't offering a prominent role either.

Good luck to him. I am glad he got a ring.

still the most bizzare move i've ever seen a player make.

Leaving the Patriots? Why is that? Early in his career he made his money. Here he got a ring. Now he wants to find somewhere where he can play the position/role he believes he can best excel. Hard to fault a guy for that, especially when he's been a class act about it.

But the position where he can best excel, may not be the position that will lead to his team winning a championship, although he might get paid more.

Kind of sad actually, but at least he got one ring.

Eagles were silently good last year. Their schedule was brutal and they lost a few close games. Went 7-9 in the toughest division in football against IMO the toughest schedule any team had. Could have easily gone 9-7 or 10-6.

People shouldn't sleep on the Eagles. If Wentz improves they will very likely be in the playoffs.

So if I'm reading the chart right, Long's signing gave us the 5th round pick? Nice trade.

Here's what happened. Pats lost 4 UFAs before today:

Ryan $10M
Sheard $8.5M
Bennett $6.75M
Mingo $2.5M

They signed three, which cancels out three picks. Gilmore, at $13M, cancels out the highest pick below him (Ryan); Guy's $3.35M does the same (Mingo). Unfortunately at the time, Burkhead ($3.15M) then canceled out the lowest remaining UFA, which was Bennett, leaving just a 4 for Sheard.

But Long's contract, at $2.5M, is less than Bennett's, so it gets canceled out instead, leaving Sheard and Bennett eligible for comp picks.

I know Long was very transparent in disclosing his reasons why he was not returning but I still think it was about the money.

Good and contender are not always necessarily the same thing, though. I don't believe they would have beaten any of the NFC's final four last season. But maybe they'll take another step.

Correct they were not a contender last year. They could be this year. Depends on Wentz.

Cool... umm...

Also let's think about the division. Washington seems to have taken a few steps back and may be the most dysfunctional team in the league Jets notwithstanding. Giants are highly combustible, I think, and could either excel or implode with little middle ground. And who knows about whether the Cowboys can maintain their surprise great season now that everyone's seen Dak and they lost a few OL?
