What's striking about this supposed infraction is the absence of a major investigation. The New York Jets will "sting" the taping of play signals. The NFL will "sting" the deflation of footballs. But in this case, teams chose to create fake scripts instead? As hated as the Patriots were, it never occurred to anyone to put a camera in the locker room and catch this in the act? That's an oddity to me, particularly given how much gossiping goes on between NFL teams.

But stealing the future – you just don't hear that. There is no winking and nodding that stuff away. You can't just cluck your tongue and file it under paranoia. It's the worst allegation yet in this saga. And if it's something that truly happened, whoever did it needs to share that shame with the NFL, rather than unloading it in the media.

If true. It's good that some are even willing to drop the line "if true". Because we'll never know as there is no evidence of it, just hearsay. Butt hurt anonymous sources trying to pile on, knowing that likely baseless accusations will be happily accepted by the masses.

"If true, then sensational statement" clickbait blogging is such an obvious form of low-effort BS that I don't really get how people can keep getting away with it. Because the public that consumes this stuff is really stupid, I guess.

Decent journalists don't treat the fact that everything they're writing about is completely unsubstantiated as a minor subpoint that they can brush under the rug with some sentence in the third paragraph along the lines of "and yes, we're not positive that this is true (but it probably is because this doesn't count as libel)".

Wow! The price of thwarting the NFL's attempt to appease its disgruntled owners is high indeed! If this tale is true, it's almost impossible to believe that even the patriots could inspire the kind of loyalty that would keep just one of the dozens of people who would have had to have known about it from seeking either his 15 minutes of fame or a payday from a tabloid.

How's that even a question. Of course they will. They tried for 8 years and the one thing they got they've turned into the biggest story in the history of the nfl. Which this thing as the nfl's attorney daniel nash put it "there was no direct evidence". They disregarded the refs recollection, disregarded science and punished based on innuendo, hearsay and stuff like Brady giving things to part time employees.

In an unrelated story, the competition committee has approved of a new rule called "opposite day". At some point, when all games have been decided, the league can issue an opposite day ruling and the participating teams will have their score flipped. This will give the winning team a loss and the losing team a win.

This rule was recommended by the grandchildren of the owners.
