the San Diego Enigma

This team currently has the #1 Offense and the #1 Defense in the league.

But they have won only 2 of 6 games!

I can see one bad game but 4 losses if they are that good?

Will the real San Diego Chargers please stand up?

Anyone who's been following this team know why they are losing?

As I wrote in another thread:

Two reasons for that statistical anomaly:

1) Norv

2) Turner

One of the freakiest stats ever, I agree. But what it comes down to is that they dominate in yardage more than points, especially on defense. (#21 scoring defense.)

Here's a team stat to ponder on the other side: The Patriots have scored easily the most points per game of any team in the league, despite facing 2 of the top 4 scoring defenses already. (5 non-offensive TDs obviously helps!)

Re: the San Diego Enigma

Ohhhh man did I misread that title. yuuccchhh.

Thought it was about Merriman trying to purge his system from steroids before a test.

Best thing I've read all day.

Re: the San Diego Enigma

After seeing Fermat's Room, I'll never think of the word enigma the same. But yes, I agree. I look forward to Brandon Tate scoring and Pat Chung blocking a punt or 3

Offense
YPG: 432.7 (1st)
Passing: 316.2 (1st)

Defense
YPG: 255.2 (1st)
Passing: 163.7 (!st)

Pretty crazy for a 2-4 team, by the far the biggest underachievers in the NFL, even more so than the Cowboys.

The weakest set of corners of any of the top teams will be playing the #1 passing offense in the league next week.

That's what you get when Norv Turner is your coach, good team, crappy record.

people who think this game is going to be a walk are insane.

they've been a horrible road team but they're averaging wins by 28 points at home. couple that with the well documented problems with the patriots on the road (no special teams explosion in Miami and that's a different game).

it's probably good that Gates will be out for that game, but I think the Pats could lose big in this one if they're not careful. With the Steelers, Vikings, and Indy coming up in the four games after next weekend, a road win will be somewhat big. The Chargers always gun for beating the Pats, and after losing to StL they're going to be on fire, I think.

Pats are going to have to score points to win this one. on the order of 28 I think.

They really don't look like it! Will be interesting!

I think we get mauled in SD next week like it was in 2005 in Foxboro between the two teams (I believe it was 05)

They need this win more than we do and besides, at least one AFC West team has to win next week, right?

I expect about 6 losses so we are still way below that prediction anyway if we do lose out there.

Quirky stuff. I think this will be a tough game, but everyone should recognize that these yardage figures have a lot to do with (i) getting into huge holes on the road and having to throw the ball every down and (ii) giving up so many special teams scores that the other team's offense does not get many drives.

They're 2-4 for a reason.

You should help Pete start a Pessimists forum. You could be the Admin. Stats are for losers. You are what your record says you are. And that's W-L and track record.

Chargers on the WC is always a tough game...

Time for the Pass and run D to step up again....another game in the maturation process for the youngsters....

Let's hope they respond and don't try and sit back on their press clippings of the Ravens game.

If Gates is out they have nothing to fear. Floyd is average. Nanee isn't very good. Matthews has been a let down and been injured so much so that they are playing a true fullback at the running back spot. Their defensive stats are inflated because of 1 game against the Cardinals.

If Phillip Rivers leads that team to a 10 win season or better, he deserves MVP.

Amen. We need to create an anti-Pats fans fan message board so that 24 hours after they were wrong about the Pats losing this game, they can all go commiserate about how they think we're going to lose the next one. The only stat that matters is W-L people.

They have played a pretty crappy schedule. The QBs they have faced are Matt Cassel, David Garrard, Matt Hasselbeck, Max Hall, Jason Campbell and Sam Bradford.

I think facing Brady is a different deal.

Also, their ST have been dreadful, costing them games. The pats ST have been very strong this year, so they will need to be a factor in the game.

I expect a full blowout, they are in desperation mode, in home, in the west... Its like the 56-0 we give to the Titans, that not means that the Titans or the Pats are bad teams, only circunstances

And those two "massive" wins at home were vs. JAX and ARI, who aren't exactly worldbeaters.
