With Chandler Jones gone and Dominique Easley -- a disappointing broken promise -- also history, I find this a big question going into 2016. On paper, this unit doesn't look athletic enough to consistently wreak havoc with opposing quarterbacks whatever combination of four guys they have out there, without linebacker help. Sheard can be a beast, hopefully Malcolm Brown takes another step forward in his second year. I am intrigued by what Chris Long might have to offer; Grissom and Flowers are question marks. I understand and accept why Jones had to go but am afraid we might miss his piece of the puzzle. And yes, I realize BB will be multiple with myriad combinations of DL/LB to muster a rush, so pondering this as purely a DL question pertaining to pass rush might be moot. Still, it would be great to see our own "fearsome foursome" out there dominating for a change.
I think you ask a great question, but let me ask you another. Back in the so called "glory days", did the Pats EVER have a DL that featured great individual pass rushers????? The answer of course was no. McGinest and Vrabel each had only one double digit sack year during their years under BB, yet the Pats were constantly around the top of the league in sacks most of those years (2003-07).
While I would love to have a Von Miller type on my team, one of the great myths of this fantasy football age is that you HAVE to have great individual rushers to have a great defense. Of course having great athletes help, but BB's (and now MattyP) have had great success "creating" pressure through innovative schemes to go along with "good" pass rushers.
Last year was a perfect example. The Pats were 2nd in the league in sacks, yet after Jones' 12, the #2 guy on the team was Sheard with just 8. When the Pats defense is at its best, you will find them near the top of the league in sacks, yet they are spread around the team, rather than concentrated in one player.
Let's put it this way. If Sheard getting starter's snaps can up his count by just 2 and we can get just 9 sacks COMBINED between Long, Flowers, etc, and guys like Hightower and Collins up their sack totals by just one; the Pats will once again be near the top of the league in sacks, even though they don't have what is commonly known as an "elite" pass rusher.
I will not say that Jones won't be missed. He was a very good and dependable football player for the Pats. Remember he was asked to do a lot more than just rush the passer, like all Pats DE's/OLB's have done in the past. I believe if they use him JUST as a pass rusher, like Denver does with Miller, his sack totals will probably rise. That being said, it was a deal that probably HAD to me made, and just because it will will help AZ too, doesn't make it a bad deal.
