What we choose to believe then or now has no bearing on what Bill was thinking. You are right. We drafted a 330 player who was the slowest player in the entire draft to play DE when our #1 issue was the possibility that Wilfork might leave.
-- True, a 330 lb plugger might be Wilfork insurance, but the technique and work ethic issues which plagued his rookie season were undoubtedly known before his draft.
-- We also see the contract NE gave Wilfork after he set an example and quietly played out his rookie deal: nothing fancy, do your job and get paid, speaks to how they thought of Vince.
-- NE bet the bank on Vince in 2009 when they traded Seymour, I don't think they ever had any thought to letting him get away, they used Sey and Vince to send a message (hello Mankins), it now appears Brace was coincidental, and not a factor in the process.
