Cam Newton: I am a Falcons fan all but 2 days a year.... WTF?

Is it wrong for a guy who works at Ford to buy and prefer Chevy's?

It's not like Jermaine Wiggins poured acid on his Pat Patriot tattoo when he went to the Jets.

Christ. It's just a job to a lot of these guys.

Ya'll mother ****ers need perspective.

Given what's at stake, it takes a special breed of idiot to remain a fan of a division rival. Those of you defending such people have some serious problems with logic and reason.

We had two Ford Plants here in Louisville and I've had friends that worked there. Let's just say that an employee had better not pull a Chevy into the employee parking lot. Bad things have been known to happen.

Many fans don't want to hear and definitely don't want to believe that it's "just a job" to a guy they drafted with the #1 overall pick and handed a ton of money to. Especially a guy who is the "Face" and leader of their franchise.

Someone how buys a ford isnt going to have hundreds of thousands, and potentially millions of fans wondering if because he drives a ford, hes sabotaging chevy.
Cam is the QB of the Panthers, that would be like if the CEO of chevy was buying fords.

That section of the southern east coast is a fans' wasteland. Nobody even wants to be a fan of The Falcons OR Panthers. Hmm... what else ya got down around there? The freaking Titans?
No good baseball either. Hey, even when The Braves were perennially good, nobody cared. They didn't even sell-out playoff games.
The sports landscape between D.C. & Miami is a black hole. It's such a large section of the country too.
Well, at least you can watch Lizard Lick Repo nutjobs in Carolina. Yee haw.
Prolly draws more viewers than any Panthers or Falcons game.

I have to say, there is a special kind of happiness I feel inside when our usually classy leader TB12 says "I hate the Jets" once or twice a year. Living close to Buffalo, I also supremely enjoy when he smack talks hotels in that city... it's a great day for radio when it happens.

I feel sorry for a fan of another team that doesn't get to experience that breed of "neener neener" joy because their QB is too stupid to realize that the second you became a leader in that division, it was your duty to drink the Hatorade and rep your team.

That boy should hate division rivals to his core regardless of how he felt before. If you want to win your division the quickest way is for the teams in it to lose all their games. Rooting for anything less would be a sign of a serious mental disorder.

What happens if Atlanta is going to play Carolina late in the season and the playoffs for the Falcons are on the line while Carolina is already eliminated from the postseason....does Cam throw the game?...some Panther fans may think so.

It was really dumb for him to admit, but I'm sure a lot of players have a special place in their hearts for a team they grew up rooting for about as passionately as we do ours.

That said, I SERIOUSLY doubt any of this means he'd throw a playoff game against Atlanta. Sounds clear that he's not a fan of them when playing against them when they meet twice a year, and I doubt that would change if they met a third time in the post season.

I doubt many of the dozens of Panther fans in existence are that worried about it.

Hi, we're talking about a game from the fan's perspective and a job from the player's perspective.

Expecting the players to become 'fans' of their team is as unrealistic as it is for me to expect you to be a fan of the McDonald's you work at.

If I got hired as the athletic director of the University of Alabama, I'd still root for the Gators. Nothing and no job would change that. I wouldn't say it publicly though.

I think it's a non-issue, as long as he doesn't throw games against the Falcons.

It really isn't that unrealistic, and your analogies are terrible. His own personal career as a quarterback is directly affected by how bad the Falcons do. Not to mention when he is eventually cut by the Panthers how other teams are going to weigh his fandom and stupidity in any contract offer they are going to give him, especially NFC teams.

Wait until he throws a pick six against the Falcons at home with a 6 point lead in the 4th quarter. That'll be a pleasant scene.

Deus doesn't work at McDonald's, he is a very high-powered lawyer with very important clients who don't mind that he spends 18 hours a day posting on a football forum.

Haha. Agreed. But hey, he invited the speculation by his comments.

You need to read my words better before answering it.....

I said if the Panthers were ALREADY eliminated from the postseason and the Falcons had to WIN their game against the Panthers to get into the playoffs, would Cam throw the game and have his team lose another just to let Atlanta get in?

It would mean a great deal to fans of both teams and Vegas in terms of gambling on the game.

Why even pay attention to what these guys say if you expect them to lie, or at least not tell the truth?

So Cam Newton is being honest, and that's a bad thing? Is he supposed to act like a politician?

ALL of these guys were fans before they were players. Most were not drafted by their favorite teams. Being a fan of a team where you are from is not something you can just cease at the drop of a hat. You bet your ass Gronk is a Buffalo Bills fan, but that doesn't affect anything, so why treat is as a problem? If you don't say it, it doesn't make it any less true.

Tons of players don't spend their whole careers on a single team, either. Are they supposed immediately do things like hate their former teammates as well?

Of course nobody is going to throw a game because of these things.

When you're being paid millions of dollars (most of which is supported by fan generated revenue packing the stadium to see you) to win the division at all costs and your career is directly affected by the team that you root for, telling the press and the entire football world that you root for the Falcons is absolutely idiotic.

No. Hes not supposed to act like a politician, which is what he does when he says he loves the falcons, his teams biggest rival, 363 days a year.

What cam newton is supposed to act like is a leader of the carolina panthers.

It also may suggest that "my current team blows, so if a position opens up at QB then pick me." The typical statement is "when I was a kid, I was a big Falcons fan." But Cam Newton is not the brightest bulb, so that level of comment does not surprise me.

Whatever. How many times have you heard a player say that he wishes such and such the best...as long as WE are not playing them?

Players say that all the time. Same thing to me.

I really couldn't care less. I don't see it as an issue.

It's not an issue for you because you're a Bills fan. Your team doesn't actually have to worry about winning divisions and such. Fans of real teams understand the problems.

I see...it's not that I just disagree, it's that I don't understand. LOL, I'm wrong because the Bills suck. I love it when other fanbases pull that one out of their anus as though it's even supposed to make sense.

Oh, the problems you guys must have! All that pressure of rooting for your team in incomprehensible ways; I just can't fathom it! The double standard is pretty strange...like you completely understand MY perspective as a Bills fan, yet I could NEVER understand YOUR perspective as a Patriots fan. Is that what it is? Listen to yourself.

I've been a football fan for well over three decades. I understand why some people would have a problem with making a comment like that, but I just don't. Also, keep in mind that he was talking from the platform of HIS event in Atlanta to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution at the time, too, if that makes any difference. Bet ya he was ASKED the question.
