I am dumb founded with the whole playoff thing.

every one and his grandmother is saying cadwell choked and droped the catch which gave us the field goal but do not mention the play before where brady completes to troy brown to goal and 1st at the 5 yrd .Offencsive penalty on Gaffney for receiver in motion .If that play would have stood we would have won too but gaffney was running around and did not set.

I vote (and the coaches will too) on the player who performs the best in camp & preseason. Both know, along with Washington & Jackson, that the competition for the final two WR spots will be intense, Their survival on the Pats depends on tremendous effort & consistant performance. Forget the past. The near future will be fascinating.

I can't believe that Gaffney is leading in this poll. Shows you that the collective intelligence of this board is not very high.

Despite the AFCCG I would take Caldwell as he was a solid, reliable WR all year. I'm just glad that this pair aren't our starters this year though.

Can someone tell me why they think Washington will make the team. It's not like he has been a standout so far? If anything, they were reporting that he looked bad in some spots. I think he's a long shot to make the team. Yet... I see lots of people penciling him in as a 3rd or 4th.

Bite your tongue. The injury bug definitely does not like the Patriots.
Thankfully for me I am very confident that what I type from 3,000 miles away has little bearing on the actual events

I'm not sure I'd call him a long shot but I'd say he's less than 50-50.

Bottom line, we have 3 WR who are on the team for sure (barring something VERY unexpected), Stallworth, Moss, Welker.

Then we have 3 spots for Brown (likely), Caldwell (likely), Gaffney, Washington, Jackson (PUP likely).

So let's see how things play out in camp.

Well Keegs, it should make you happy that I voted for Gaffney. I must have missed this one previously.

I like both of them, and wouldn't be upset if they both make the team. (Assuming Jackson is PUPed) Gaffney, Caldwell, Brown, and Washington are fighting for three spots (unless they find an extra spot to carry Troy as a special teamer/DB or convince Troy to retire and wait for an injury or one of the other guys to get cut). Washington could just as easily be the odd man out.

The poll question simply asks which I like better and the answer is Gaffney. It is in no way an indictment of Caldwell, as I don't think we should judge him based on a drop or two or because his eyes bug out. I think Caldwell is ideally a #3 or 4 receiver, while I can see Gaffney as a starter.

Something important to note is that NE will need WRs in '08, and whoever they let go can sign a multiyear deal with another team and be unavailable in '08. I would rather Gaffney step into a starting role in '08 than Caldwell.

Oh, and all of my judgement on them is purely subjective. I watched both and I liked what I saw from Gaffney more. Maybe I'm just falling for upside potential here.

Thank you. Somehow people like us are viewed as whackos when it comes to sports.

How many catches did Gaffney have in the regular season again?

How many TC's and preseason games did Gaffney participate with the Patriots last year?

Look... I think both sides have made a good case. 27 pages later and the same arguments are being rehashed. The majority has consistently favored Gaffney. But ultimately the decision lies with BB and no one else. Let's let this thread go away.

Someone just doesn't go from being a scrub one week (Week 17) to being a starter the next (vs. Jets).

Who says that? Maroney had plenty of off weeks and he wasn't signed during mid-season either. Is he a scrub too?

That's not my point. You can't use the "Gaffney wasn't signed until October" argument for the Week 17 (and prior performance) but not use it for a game less than six days later.

And since when was Maroney signed mid-season?

I know your point... it goes something like... despite outperforming Caldwell in all three playoff games, Gaffney's postseason performance was a fluke because he didn't immediately put up numbers after he was signed during mid-season. Then you pointed to the 2001-02 case of Jermaine Wiggins as support. However that comparison has been discredited along time ago.

That would be a measly 11. An average of a WHOPPING 1 catch per game! :singing:

But don't look at the regular season and disregard the larger bady of his work because he did better in the playoffs. You know that pressure, if you can do it in the playoffs then obviously you are better (just don't compare Caldwell's regular season to Gaffney's because that blows up the entire argument).

as you ignore the fact that Reche was with this team all of last season and Mr. Gaffney joined in October and only started 6 regular season games.

I guess it's ok for you to leave out information and then criticize others for supposedly leaving out information.

I had no idea you were so important.

And that addresses anything I said how...?

I don't really get it.

The Pro-Caldwell side likes to assume that Gaffney just had a "fluke" 3 playoff games in a row, yet there is absolutely no proof that his play could not continue to be good.

Yet this side make the bold move of assuming that Caldwell's 2 enormous choke drops aren't ever going to happen again.

Not 2 games by a close range .....

Gaffney vs Jets - He was covered by their 3rd CB who was coming back from missing a few games and was playing very deep.Gaffney caught 4 balls for close to 45 yrds in the first 5 minutes and disapperred as soon as they swapped miller to cover him closer. He doubled his 5 minute production in 55 minutes.

Gaffney In AFC - 2 Dumb penalities the worst was in the red zone when instead for 5 and goal the troy brown catch was called back due to dumb penalty moving it to 1 st and 15 at the 20 .

I am suprised you are defended a player who cost us critical first downs in the redzone.

You are defending Caldwell.

He makes those 2 big catches, Pats have another ring simple as that.

But I shouldn't be defending Gaffney now should I?

The Pro-Caldwell side continues to amaze me.

P.S. You do realize that if it wasn't for Gaffney bailing out your buddy, he would look like an even bigger choke right?
