Butler and Langi Seem To Be Among Our Top 53 Players

Valentine averaged about 18 snaps per game to Brown's 33 in 2016. His role seemed to me to be "relief man" and occasional interior pass-rusher. With the addition of Butler and Guy, I'd expect his snap count to be reduced in 2017 to backup level, and he may even be inactive a few games while Butler and Guy are active for most games.

Langi seemed to be getting a lot of ST work and embracing it wholeheartedly. He seems likely to me to be Grissom's replacement.

However, I think the odds that Carr gets claimed off waivers are fairly high. If the Pats want to hang onto him, I think they'll need to keep him through cutdowns and (perhaps) try to sneak him through to the PS later.
I would be incredibly shocked if Austin carr was claimed off waivers.
What about him makes you think a team would do that?

Yeah, how is that even an option?
It's not. I don't think the poster thought about the cap, the fit and how well he has played this preseason

All of the 32 teams have been scouting each other's rosters assiduously since immediately after the draft. None of the other 31 are unaware of how Carr has performed in pre-season with the Pats. Several of them need WR help.

Odds are ....

Do you think he sucks?

I am not impressed by his preseason. 11 catches for under 10 ypc.
I could be wrong but I think Carr will be in a group of about 50 WRs that get cut that he is not clearly above and many will have experience.

I've been wrong before but I see nothing special about carr, he just made a couple of catches mostly against guys who won't be in the league.

I think he is in a large group of guys who could possibly make a roster and not contribute much or never play in the league.
If I had to guess he will be a ps squad guy for a couple of years who may see a game or so due to injuries. Nothing more than that.

It was curious that they did not have him play the 1stringers w TB12 at QB.

I'm not sure what to make of him but he stood out vs JAX 2nd teamers

That would be the likely outcome.

I think he's worth giving an extended look.

I mean he caught a td pass against scrubs.
Beyond that he looked like a borderline, practice squad kind of guy. Made some routine plays did nothing special.

Along with a ton of other guys. That's why I see no issue getting him on the practice squad.

I feel a Sudfeld 2.0 scenario coming on. Extended look at a position that needs now and future depth and see if he swims or sinks

I think the problem here is that you're thinking too much like BB would. Other team owners, GMs and personnel guys aren't nearly that rational.

Not really. I just don't see what other teams would see in carr that's any better than what they have. JAGs don't get claimed on waivers and I think carr at last at this stage is 100% JAG who doesn't stand out from the crowd at all. Actually BB would be more likely to want him than other teams because he may sees role player in him.

And yet, a lot of other teams sign JAGs all the time. Which is among the many reasons why they're not the Patriots.

The patriots sign JAGs also. My point is simply there are many JAGS an carr isn't special among them. Teams will keep their own JAG instead of bringing in someone else's

This may be incredibly unpopular but what about Butler for Landry straight up?
Butler got beat in few coverage a few times this preseason he's in the last year of his contract we have some young dbs we like we could see a bigger role for Jonathan Jones and maybe Cyrus gets on the field more and push Eric Rowe to number 2 corner.
I don't love the idea of going against Butler but you know BB would know how to attack him.
If the option was coughing up a second or Malcom Butler I think I'd rather trade Butler if we're not considering extending him.

I wouldn't do it Chris. There is a big drop off after our top three corners. I don't want to weaken our corner position while adding a number 3 or number 4 wide receiver. I know Butler's had a tough pre season, but I think he's going to be fine.

The PS is made for players like Lucien, Carr, Foster and whoever else we might sign from other teams. I'd rather carry an additional special teamer into Game 1 and Game 2 than use the roster spot for any of these players. Of course, Belichick might find a late veteran cut, or even trade for a WR if Mitchell isn't ready.

I could see us starting the season with 3 active WR's. That's plenty, given our TE's and RB's.
Have to disagree. Cooks, Dola, Hogan, Mitchell. Total right there is > 3.

Perhaps, you don't understand the meaning of "active". Each week, 7 of the 53 are not active and not available to play. My point is that is OK for there to be only 3 WR's available to be active for a a game or two. Mitchell seems unlikely to be active for Game 1.

Thought you were talking the 53 man roster, backed by PS. Agree with you on game day needs, but it will be driven by matchups. Need enough depth on the 53 to have flexibility for matching up. That's why Squirrel needs a replacement.
