Burn Some Cash 2: Jerod's Ghost

He's not going anywhere. Burrow is going to pressure Ownership into re-signing him and Chase.

I wonder if even Burrow has all that much juice with notorious tightwad Mike Brown.

He’s already calling out Ownership and offering a restructuring of his contract if it came to it.

Yep and Burrow has made sure that's widely known. What I fail to see is how that's going to open Mike Brown's wallet when he's already facing the cost of Chase's extension. Chase and Higgins will require beaucoup bucks in cash outlay. Never mind the questionable wisdom of tying up 25-30 % of your cap in two WR's, the notoriously cheap Brown would need to cough up the upfront cash spending to seal those deals. I'm not saying it should or shouldn't happen or debating whether or not it should I'm just doubting Burrow can influence Brown to go against his nature.

FA was slim pickings for reasons we all know about it. I fault him for the draft. The Polk and Baker picks were awful.

Players taken after round 1 need time to develop. Both had terrible seasons under a horrible coaching staff, but that doesn’t mean they are busts. Give it another season and see who starts to develop. Most here wanted Boutte gone his rookie season, now they want him to stay.

Letting your QB dictate how you structure your cap spending is almost as bad as letting the fans do it.

Welp kiss this dream goodbye.
This is the 'We were totally in on him guys' leak. Like Calvin Ridley, Nuc Hopkins and everyone else.

Looks like it will be Rondale Moore or Jamison Crowder, kids.
I'd say Chris Conley, which would actually make me happy, but I have it on good authority he's going to retire.

Sure, we can wait, but time isn't going to make Polk more athletic. Baker appears to be more athletic than Polk, but doesn't seem to be able to learn the offense. I'd be happy if they panned out, and happy to admit I was wrong, but not seeing it. Maybe new coaches will unlock their potential.

How has it been debunked and how do you know it's overblown?

It's overblown by fans who somehow believe those are "factors" causing free agents to shun the Patriots. Has anyone ever quoted a free agent on the record nixing New England specifically because of weather, alleged lack of nightlife or state taxes? If weather and nightlife were deal breakers, the likes of Green Bay, Buffalo, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Minnesota would struggle while teams in L.A., Florida, Texas, etc. would be exclusive talent magnets. I know for a fact that New England's pro athletes have favorite social haunts in greater Boston/Providence. (The Boston-Worcester-Providence metro region is the seventh-largest combined statistical area in the U.S.) No, it's not Miami, but it's not Siberia either and certainly family friendly enough for many to put down roots past their playing days.

The state tax thing appears a non-factor. My understanding is it applies only to games played in Foxboro and easily can be addressed by a 4.5-percent stipend added to contracted pay OR by simply paying more than competing offers.

The bottom line for attracting free agents primarily is the bottom line (money). Second is a stable program offering the chance to succeed. Not long ago during the Pats' dynasty years, BB and Brady were big drawing cards for free agents, some of whom took below-market deals to work with the best and compete for championships. Minor considerations like seasonal weather apparently were far down the list.

TT would like to have a word!

Just because Thornton sucked it doesn’t mean you stay away from fast WR’s. Mathew Golden fits exactly what the Patriots need at WR, and although he’s rising up draft boards they can get him late first /early second round but they will need to be aggressive about it.

I like Golden a lot. I don't know how the Patriots would get him.

Isaiah Bond is a similar player who was playing hurt all year. We saw how Xavier Worthy translate on the NFL level. I feel good about the Texas boys.

Unfortunately, our new WRs coach isn't even close to being up to that particular task.

That's 1 of the guys he was referring to! Not sure if it was Groh or Wolf, but I remember the comment after the draft.

It was Al Groh' kid. He was acting like the **** of the walk in Mobile & Indianapolis in 2022 because he was now the senior exec in the building (not including Berj Najarian) and probably thought he was gonna be somebody's GM in a couple or so years, the ****ing clueless, ****ing incompetent nepo-hire clown.
