Bruins 2024-2025

OK i'll betcha a beer he retires or plays somewhere else next season

If he escapes the playoffs healthy, you can take retirement off the list. He wants to play in the Olympics next year

Does anyone else think the compensation for Marchand was weak? A 2027 second round pick that could become a 2028 first round pick?

Weak? Considering Marchand's age, injury status, expiring contract and limited no trade clause it's not terribly realistic to have expected a great deal more than they got. Of course we always want our team to bend the other guy over in a trade but honestly if we were Panther fans we'd probably be thinking they gave up too much for an old injured rental. Yes, I understand the concept of a Panther's fan actually thinking is a stretch. Bruins fans would require full frontal lobotomies to get to the (ahem) level of Panther fans so that particular projection is highly speculative on my part.

My crystal ball is more like a Magic 8 Ball but since you ask, my guess is closer to 70/30.
I feel like this sort of thing almost never happens in any sport in the modern era.

Jamie Collins is the only player I can think of right now who returned to a Boston team after being traded (not including guys who signed one-day contracts to retire in a certain uniform.)

The energy generated yesterday by the B's was a breath of fresh air. Not sure that it is sustainable long term, but it was fun to watch a team give such youthful effort. I'm interested to see if they can keep it going for a bit.

So, what exactly did the Bruins receive in return for their captain?

The Bruins acquired a 2027 conditional second-round draft pick, the team announced.

The conditional second-rounder will become a 2027 or 2028 first-round pick if the Panthers win two rounds of the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs and Marchand appears in at least 50% of Florida’s playoff games.

Boston will retain 50% of Marchand’s salary.

Question is will fans stick by the Bruins during the rebuild. Or, are they looking at early 2000's type paid attendance?

Would be shocking to see an original six team get that type of attendance.

I do think they are taking the right approach by rebuilding. They were stuck in the middle the past few years.

Attendance almost always goes down when teams struggle. But ticket prices will be cheaper on the secondary market for a bit and folks who want to attend a B's game that are on a limited budget will be able to justify going. But if it extends out a few years we will be seeing lots of empty seats. Tickets are expensive. Schedule more games against the Habs and attendance will be fine. LOL

the thing about Boston sports is, no matter if the team sucks, the fans still show up and pack the place. That, and Boston is also a college town not to mention a tourist destination. College kids are going to attend games and people coming to Boston to sight see will also make the trip to a game (especially Fenway). I don't see attendance going down IMO

BC students often get discounted ticket offers ($9) from the Sox organization for games in April and September when cold weather and suckiness influence attendance

Marchand sure doesn't sound like he harbors any ill will that would prevent his returning to Boston. From The Athletic:

“The one thing I always respect — I told (president Cam Neely) and Sweens this — is they have a job to do,” Marchand said. “They have to make the best decisions for the team. I completely understand where the decisions need to be made. Sometimes they work against you. That’s why I believe Sweens is one of the best, if not the best, general managers in the league. I’ve watched him for a very long time excel at his job. For those who are in the organization and know the effort he puts in every day and how hard he works, no one would question where his loyalty lies, and that’s to do the best for the team every day. When you’re part of that group, you feel it."

I fell asleep early, dealing with the flu still. Did Marchand play?

No Marchand, he's week to week. Florida also placed Tkachuk on long term IR, so both he and Marchand are being looked at for the Panthers playoff run.

Last night's game may have been the B's best overall of the season. Lohrei continues the elevation of his game. Everyone's legs were moving last night, a good sign this team hasn't quit on each other.

I did see the Zadorov/Bennett fight at the end. I thought that looked like a good message sent.

****y move on Bennett's part going after Zadorov after the linesman had him wrapped up. Thought better of him

I love the energy from this new roster. Not sure the talent level will be there long-term, but once they make the playoffs, they just need 16 wins before anyone else. If this youthful energy can bring out the "animal-mode" in Swayman "anything is possible".
So, sue me, I'm an optimist. Haha.

B's got screwed on the matching penalties that led to Fla's second goal, because earlier in the game the refs evened things up in almost the same exact scenario. That really pissed me off, I was really fired up for the first time in a month or so.
