Brandon Lloyd meeting with 49ers: Patriots are gonna blow it

There's enough money for a Welker deal, a WR deal, a S deal and drafting defense in the draft.

This. But if we go off half-****ed and over pay on day 1.5 there wont be.

Steady has she goes, commander.

and we continue to let talent get away in FA. Okay Belichick you whifted on Adalius, big deal. Throw your hat back in the ring and get some play makers.

Let the misery begin.

Step into the Wayback Machine to 1992 and sit in section 209 and we'll see how much you are sick of this era of Patriots football.

Wait a minute. Our seats were in section 209. 209 row three (which due to stairs was actually row one) seat 28 or 29 was me.

Great seats. Right around the 20 and we had a wall in front of us to lean on. good sight angles at the whole field. Our current seats are very similar but in the first section and no wall.

The other side of that coin is that deals like Jackson's and Johnson's have just raised the WR market, and guys like Welker and Lloyd can now ask for more money.

That's the downside of the "wait and see" approach. You end up waiting until all the good players are gone and seeing if the mediocrity can somehow morph into greatness. It's usually a losing strategy, which is why BB has to take such a volume approach when he uses it.

Eli Manning with Nicks-Cruz and Manningham???? If we have an Offense that sustains Drives that equates to less time for D on field...I want a WR that can Stretch the field not name Ocho or Branch.

I want more production from Branch/his position as well. But I also want better play from the safety, outside linebacker and defensive ends.

In my opinion the productivity of the offense in 2012 was far superior to the productivity of the defense. With Gronkowski, Hernandez and Welker on the team I don't consider spending half (or more) of the remaining available cap space on a receiver to be a wise allocation of a limited resource.

per Schefter: Brandon Lloyd will meet with the 49ers.

I've had a feeling all along the Patriots would some how blow signing Brandon Lloyd and it could very well be on the verge of happening. The 49ers will offer him more money and The Patriots will be stuck once again with Ocho and Branch next to Welker. Reggie Wayne is gone, Colston is gone, Meachem is gone, Vincent Jackson is gone. So what's left? Mario Manningham? Burress? Jerome Simpson? all underwhelming options.

Glad this ******* got banned

Adding better WRs is not some magic pill that automatically wins championships if you have a great QB. In the current era look no further than the Colts, who used the formula so many here are pleading for; net result was one championship in fourteen seasons. Similarly you can look in the past to players like Dan Fouts (zero in fifteen seasons) or Dan Marino (zero in seventeen seasons).

The other thing to consider is this: people seem to have contracted amnesia regarding the state of the Patriots defense. For every dollar spent on the wide receiver position, that's one less dollar available to spend on all the positions in need of upgrade elsewhere.

- I never said getting a WR was a magic pill but I do think it's very foolish to discount the impact that a good WR can have. I rather doubt Joe Montana and Steve Young have such great careers without Jerry Rice.

- The Colts also tended to go very heavy with their WRs to the neglect of other positions. Ultimately it's about balance, and I think we're too light in that area right now, if they get Lloyd and Dallas Clark I'll happly shut up.

- I keep on hearing about how we can't sign upgrade the offense because we need to improve the defense, unless we actually start spending in that area then I think the point is moot. Red Bryant won't happen and I severely doubt Mario Williams will as well.

I think we (my folks paid as I was a poor college student at the time) were in Row 9 had two spots 17 and 18 I think...Memory is bad.

Either:

A. Lloyd is a locker room issue like Bedard speculated even with McDaniels reeling him in so the Pats have passed not loving him the way he loved them.

B. (most likely) His assigned value for himself was much greater than the number the Patriots had in mind so they told him to see what other offers are out there not wanting to out bid themselves.

Like it or not they stick to their value system and more often than not it's worked out for them. If I could change it in any way it would be resigning their own players earlier. They could have gotten Assante, Mankins, Wilfork and Wes all cheaper had they re-upped them early and not made them play to the duration of their original contracts. I pray they learn from this and get Gronk (especially) and Hernandez resigned ahead of time.

What does are defense need badly? Play makers.
What can you get in Free Agency? Play makers.
Who is scared of FA since Thomas? BB

Well, since you seem more comfortable arguing with yourself, I'll leave you to it.

If you want to read what is actually written and respond accordingly, do let me know.

You are being in denial though, that is for sure. Everyone knows we need more help.

Not entirely true, they tried to re up Mankins two years ago but he wanted top dollar and ended up getting what he wanted, Assante wasnt coming back no matter what since he didnt do what the coaches wanted.
Its a myth that they never go to players and try to extend them, we just never hear about them unless they sign (ex. Mayo), if its someone they want long term, they try to do it but not all players take a discount for re-upping early.

Man, some of these posts make me absolutely sick......have some faith, just because lloyd is meeting with the 49ers doesn't mean he has signed a contract. Even if we don't get lloyd we still have draft picks. Everyone seems to forget that our offense was nothing short of prolific last season, sure we could use a deep threat, but if it were not for rogers, TB would have set the all time passing yards record. Enough of the crying about how we never make a splash in free agency.

Assante could have been had for 5M/year before the 06 season but then he broke out and after that yes he was never coming back.

Mankins wanted to get paid as well but they could have gotten him for 7/year instead of the just over 8/year they paid.

I never said they don't sign players early. Ty Warren, Nick Kaczur and Dan Koppen are three more. But in these cases the deals were for below market value where the team was getting a total deal but the player some long term security in a sport where injuries can end your career quickly. Mayo is the exception to the rule. He got a market value deal which tells you how much they value him. I'm hoping with the TEs they're willing to get to something close to market in order to get it done.

Finley just got 2/15M with the idea he'll cash in during the FA period for 2014 when the cap esculates. Gronk is going to be in prime position for that too. Gronk is playing on a 4/4.1 contract. I don't have the details but lets assume you have him for a million on each of the next two seasons even though it's probably less with a signing bonus. If he comes up in 2014 you might be looking at 5/60 to sign him and I think that's conservative. If they said to him now we'll extend you for 5 years and 40M and give you 10M up front now the total deal would be 7/42 vs 7/62 the other way. So by being proactive and giving the player long term security they've made him more affordable by 20M.

If he puts up two more years like this it's going to be more than 12M/year.

our "prolific" offense was anemic in the AFCCG and scored only 17 points in the superbowl, was inconsistent and one dimensional and struggled out of the gate many times relying on the no huddle even against the uber soft schedule we had for the last 10 or so games. WR is not some kind of luxury for this team it's a need. Expecting them to fill that need in the draft is crazy considering the Pats track record in that department and the fact that there's only a few of them that make a first year impact anyway.
