Tom Brady's letter to a heartbroken family

Several Serra coaches and administrators discussed contacting Brady, who has long been loyal to the school. It was Walsh who ultimately reached out with a text message. Brady had heard about the murder and was anxious to help. Walsh provided some of the background and also told Brady about the connection between the Kirby and Riley families. Kirby is one of many former teammates who has stayed in loose contact with Brady over the years. The two men talked. “I told Tommy about the family,” says Kirby. “And Tommy said, How about I write them a letter?”

Tears. Read this entire article. Makes me furious that THIS is the guy ****dell took to the woodshed. THIS is the guy who has the ire of fans outside of Patriots. What an amazing human being.

Read it, and was thinking the same thing by the end of it.

NFL logic = Pregnant girlfriend chokers, girlfriend abusers, wife abusers, people who evade police are cool...but Brady is a piece of ****? **** you NFL.

But really, the view on Brady isn't as bad as the comment sections would have you believe. Some knuckle dragging oxygen thief kept saying "crybaby Brady" when a bunch of us were talking football, and everyone just ignored him, while talking about how all Brady does is win. A Texans fan went on a rant about how people should appreciate what they're seeing in TFB, because it's Ruthian, and a Dolphins fan wholeheartedly agreed. Most people see through the ********.

It was the same thing with Michael Jordan. I despised the guy and rooted against him, but near the end I began to appreciate what I was watching in front of me and tried to relish it for what it what it was. The greatest athlete to play in his given sport. Brady is the same thing, but by all accounts a much nicer and approachable human being off the field.

Christ, this makes me furious in about ten different ways.

I have no anger from this at all, actually it is the opposite. I read this and feel better and happier. It is because I root for the good guy, the right guy. A guy, who in what could have been his worst time, took time to reach out and be the good guy. The NFL does not see that but who cares. The people who need to know, know. The Riley’s know. The Schoenhardt's know. And we know. Be happy my fellow Pats fans, because we are on the right side.

Nice story but sad to read and think about.

As much of a myth Tom Brady has become in our minds and hearts, he's just another human being.

His outside is different than most of us, but inside he's no different

I give Brady the most credit for stepping into emotional situations. By helping people that suffer, he has to feel their sadness.

I hope when Brady retires, he can find the peace and privacy he needs.

Thanks for posting this!

A couple of things :

1) It wasn't just a letter, it was two pages handwritten. It could have easily been a single paragraph (which would still have been awesome) but it was clearly much more than that.

2) This showing the good in Brady reminds me of when they leaked the cell phone texts back in the thick of deflategate. There could have been all kinds of nasty stuff on those. We had no business seeing them but since we did, Brady came across as a great guy - even resisting the chance to rip Peyton (when he simply said "Peyton has two more years, I have seven - THAT is the final chapter" or whatever it was). Suffice it to say he could have said other stuff but didn't.

Brady is the best. Period.

My god that poor kid and family. Jesus.

Tom is a good dude. So glad he recognizes how much his celebrity helps people get though tough times.

Remember when that douchebag Philly fan bumped into Brady at an airport, asked Brady if he could take a picture with him, and after Brady accommodated him he posted the picture on the internet calling Brady '****boy'?

Remember all those fan and player polls that named Brady as one of the most hated players in the league, more hated than guys like Mike Vick, Greg Hardy and Ray McDonald?

Remember when tens of thousands of fans booed Brady mercilessly at the Super Bowl ceremony honoring past MVPs, right after giving Ray Lewis a rousing ovation?

Remember when the scuzzy jets commissioner went after Brady with everything he had so he could drag Brady's good name through the mud over some nonsense that never happened?

It really is crazy

Thank you, this is really the thing. Many people will always think negatively about the Patriots and about Brady, and all of the internet gnashing of teeth we do will never change that.

At some point we just have to be grateful for the opportunity we've had to support him, and understand that the people on the other side just have it wrong and will never change their minds. It's infuriating, but once you accept it, it makes it easier not to get wound up about it (Brady himself constantly says that one of his guiding principles is to not worry about the things he can't change or control).

Articles like this one continually help me realize all this.

The SI writer did prove that he is a scum azzhole, though - witness that paragraph-long disclaimer towards the end.

They never put disclaimers like that in when sucking Manning's or Rodger's balls.

History is going to look very kindly on Brady, and realize that in all of this, Goodell and his favorites were the Ty Cobbs all along.

Just Tom being Tom. Duh, gee Tennessee, can we get Tom's autograph someday?

Whew! Ty Cobb was a great guy compared to the NFL losers...overcame terrible personal childhood trauma to be a fierce competitor...not some evil scum screwing over innocent people...

Makes me despise Goodell even more, the whole league office is a piece of schitt....brady is simply incredible
Would be nice if folks also realize that all this is not "new"...Accept the fact that the league has been after them for decades, and the league and owners' vendetta against the Patriots is in fact familiar, and only surprising to those who follow right along with Kraft's oblivousness (or, more accurately, blindness) to it since before he bought the team.

A lot of the negative stuff that was out there about Cobb was from a sportswriter who despised Cobb. Over time the myths became fact.

Cobb was a racist. That makes him scum in my book.
