Brady/Maye

Are people comparing what Brady had around him in 2001 to Maye in 2024? I will repeat it till I am blue in the face that it is a totally different game, but the guys on that 2001 roster are light-years better than anyone Maye had around him.

Kevin Faulk is a better pass-catching back than anyone on the roster this year. Troy Brown and David Patten alone produced 5 fewer catches but 277 more yards than our entire receiver room this season. I don't know if a single offensive lineman Maye had would crack the starting lineup in 2001. The 2024 TE group is the only upgrade over 2001. None of that even takes into account the fact that we had 2 Hall of Famers, multiple All-Pros, and Pro Bowlers on defense.

Brady was special, and there is a 99.99999999999% chance Maye will never come close to what Brady did, but criticizing him for not leading comebacks with a bad coach and terrible roster isn't fair.

Kraft realized that he didn't set Mayo up in a great position to succeed this year, and apologized to Mayo for doing so at the press conference.

That said, even accounting for the fact that he was dealt a terrible hand, Mayo still could've done enough to give Kraft confidence that he could turn things around. But he didn't. My gut tells me that the "Gibson is starting" fubar was the final straw. Whatever happened there, it was his fault, and just glibly saying "Coaches' decision" after the fact showed he wasn't taking responsibility for it.

One of the last straws for me was about 12 games into the season, when Alex Van Pelt said that he had no idea that Marcus Jones played on offense. How the hell does Jerod Mayo not tell his offensive coordinators that he has guys on the bench who could help their anemic offense? That was head coach malpractice at its finest. Any Patriot fan could have told Van Pelt that, but Mayo never bothered to. I was disgusted by that. The final straw however came when he put Maye back in to the Chargers game. I wanted him fired on the spot. I wanted either Bob or Jonathan to go down to the sideline, tell him to give the headset to Van Pelt, take Mayo into the blue tent, and fire his ass right then and there.
