Brady: I wouldn't have had the success I've had without Bill

Coaches cannot teach talent. What they can do is put players with talent in the best situation to maximize the talent. That is what Belichick did with Brady. Brady had the talent and Belichick nurtured it.

And let's face it, there is a chance that if Brady ended up on another team that he might not have even made it into the NFL or just languished on a team's practice squad for a few years and exited the league. In 2000, Belichick saw the talent in him and decided to keep a fourth QB that year to keep him on the roster, but another head coach may not have seen that talent and let him squander it.

lol ok only Bull can see if a QB not drafted in the first round has talent

I disagree. BB carried Brady as a fourth QB. He recognized something. It was only a matter of time before he benched Bledsoe. Moe just expedited the decision.
Right but Brady had to put the work in and actually perform.

Regardless, both needed each other.

Yes. I agree that both needed each other. But I disagree that BB would have been unemployed.

Stop being foolish. The guy was a sixth round pick. He wasn’t a second or third rounder. If the Pats didn’t draft him, he might not have been drafted at all. What sixth or seventh round QB pick or undrafted free agent even gets much of a shot to prove himself before he is sent packing. Belichick saw enough potential to make him the fourth QB on the roster, but how many teams would carry four QBs?

Let’s not pretend Brady came into the league as the GOAT. Few teams felt he could make it in the NFL and a lot of head coaches wouldn’t have even given him a shot. And who knows if anyone would have picked him up after being cut?

The reports say he would've gotten fired in NE.

I'm not insinuating he wouldn't have gotten another HC job elsewhere.

Maybe I misheard the quote from the major media talking head recently who knew assistant Coaches with the Pats at the time. But I do remember the assistants were freaking out as well.

To be fair, I don't think Bill took over a SB roster. In fact, he didn't. It was a rebuild.

Firing him would've been short sighted imo.

Without Bill as coach, that affects Brady.

It definitely wasn’t a SB roster. Not even close. But playoffs shouldn’t have been too much to ask. It was filled with aging players, bad contracts and bad draft picks. However, they still had major players to carry them: Bledsoe, Glenn, Damien Woody (even though he couldn’t snap the ball in shotgun to save his life), McGinest, Katzenmoyer, Ted Johnson, Bruschi (had a nice season but still unproven), Law, and Milloy. I didn’t add Vinnetari as he was just alright kicker at the time.

Because of this, Kraft expected to get back to the playoffs quickly. The 2000 roster was atrocious and Pats fans are lying if they say they expected that. That roster was pretty much completely gutted. 2001 was better, but really old and looked awful with Bledsoe in the lineup. In fact, that loss to Cincy opening day was pretty inexcusable. I don’t think Bill gets fired in 2001, but more like 2002 as they didn’t make the playoffs and their defense regressed badly.

What report?

It's clear to me that he liked Brady early on by carrying him as the fourth QB. It's also clear to me that Brady outperformed Bledsoe during the preseason. It was also clear to me that if Bledsoe kept losing we'd see Brady.

I'm not sure how closely you followed the Patriots back then but that was the general consensus.

BB wasn't on a hot seat and he wasn't getting fired.

Mo Lewis expedited his decision.

For sure.

But I think Brady likely wins rings with a lot of good coaches like say Reid or even Pete. He did win one with Arians.

I’d say he could even win one with a lesser HC. Peyton Manning took Jim Caldwell to a SB so I’m sure Brady could have done the same. Caldwell is not really a good HC.
As much as BB has been criticized with his team building recently, what he did with brady over 20 yrs is unprecedented. Cant say for sure reid or caroll could do the same. He realized what brady was. Structured the offense around him, changed the offense every 2-3 yrs around him and brady for his part took less, stayed here, and executed everything. Too many coaches are married to a single approach .Look at sean payton, for all those yrs with brees they have 1SB to show for it and that to from almost 10 yrs ago. If BB coached another QB for 20 yrs and brady played with another coach for 20 yrs , they might have won a SB but no way they wouldve won 6 .

Brady also did the work and got his chance.

Plenty of guys get drafted and do nothing. Some are very talented. Others not so much. Talent isn't enough in football.

And let's be honest. Bill Belichick is likely unemployed if Mo Lewis doesn't happen. I researched and Bill told Jets employees coaches were putting their house on the market. Then fate struck.

In the end, it's moot. Brady did happen. Best HC/QB combo in history.
Brady kinda put his career on the line leaving the jets . After the cleveland failure, the way he left was criticized and he had a serious chance of not getting another job. Luck went his way but it isnt easy to walk away from a situation where you are the HC and that to go into a situation like pats in cap hell and lot of avg players with a 100m$ QB.

This about sums it about BB's role in this organization although most of people here will disagree because we had a losing season last yr and brady is coming

any team where you could hand off the ball to... um Antowain Smith... or dump the ball off to er... Arthur Love, that's a SB waiting to happen... oh shut up whoever said that lol

I think Peanut Butter Cups wouldn't be any good without chocolate. So pretty much the same thing if you replace peanut butter with vegemite, right?

It was a long term rebuilding plan. Twenty years ago, coaches had multi-year strategies which owners respected. Nowadays, coaches are often scapegoat fired after a year or two despite the team problems being about player talent and not schemes or motivational speeches. It’s better to retain a coach long-term to keep the continuity of players who fit the system. It’s dumb to change it up with a reset every two years (Jets.)
