Belichick signed to long term contract

Nah… he’s dead wood. Get him off the roster, his teammates know he can’t play. Send him away like N’Keal Harry.
He’s still on his rookie deal might as well use him in transition. He won’t get the 5th year anyway. Of course if and when he stinks it up then it’s time for the new guy.

This just shows how bad Mayo is at business decisions.

What franchise ever had no down period in 24 years?
What franchise went to 4 SBs in 5 years, won 3 of them and didn’t go through a down time after that?

Kraft isn't a stupid man. There has to be an eject button in there somewhere.

His contract was done before the season.. however this doesn't mean he still couldn't be traded. Sean Payton has recently signed a extension with NO before he was moved for example.

But seen as how the season has unraveled.. going to be interesting how things go forward.

Likely he probably wasn't aware BB got an extension. If I remember correctly it was around Feb/March mayo got extended? But yeah... I'd be pissed if my mayo.. but who knows how long BBs extension was 2yrs? 3yrs?

Nah, they know what he is. They’ll use him now to acquire a much higher draft pick, he sucks that bad.

Start next year with either a rookie QB or start Grier/Zappe until the rookie is ready.

This has to have, as Paul Harvey once said, “the rest of the story “. I’m thinking it was extended to include golden parachute provisions in case it became necessary to part ways.

Either that or we know who has possession of the suppressed Kraft-Orchids of Asia video.

Any other coach would have been fired after the Patricia debacle. Belichick got a long term extension.

What if Belichick loses the team this year and Kraft deems it too expensive to fire Bill? They may have to cut and/or trade upwards to 20 or so players under contract in 2024. You cannot go into 2024 with Belichick and keep players who end up turning on him this year.

In 2010, they purged all the malcontents from 2009. But it was only a small group and nothing of them other than maybe Adalius Thomas were consequential in any way. But this year, it could be far more players and more impactful players.

Mayo got duped and now his stock is dropping. He has no DC/Assistant HC title and not really known for anything.

Getting a HC interview is not easy, yet he passes it up. Pretty idiotic move.

The fact that he signed an extension for the greatest to ever do the job proves he’s smart. The fact that people think fixing the current situation would be fine better without him proves they are not.

We are not going to rebuild this team without the guy who chose N’Keal Harry over scrubs like Deebo Samuel or AJ Brown. Or the guy who selected a guard in the first round who is an average guard at best.

Belichick is the absolutely wrong person to fix this situation because he is the person who got the Pats in this situation.

Bill as a HC only
A new GM
A better QB than Jones

I’m ok with that.
Even better:

BB “retires” as HC. Hire new young HC with an offensive mind who names BB as D-coordinator.

Too bad that won’t happen but imagine what this team looks like with BB focusing only on what he’s always done best and the offense with new thinking and a fresh perspective.

If true, Bill isn't going anywhere. Kraft is too cheap to give him a huge cash settlement to not coach for the Pats and it definitely does not want to face the possibility of subsidizing his contract with another NFL team.

It’s the only way. Every year it’s like field goal kicker, there might be 2-3 who make an NFL career out of it.

Look at Mac’s draft class, none of them are great, the first overall pick in the draft has been average/good at best… take the machine gun approach and bring 4-5 QB’s to camp.

It‘s funny. There at least a few people on this oars who said the Pats had to whatever it takes to get any of the five QBs in that draft because, the way first round QBs had been performing in the last few drafts, all five are going to great or even studs. People locally and nationally compared that draft to 1983. So far you got a low top ten QB at best and the other four have done nothing except for Jones his rookie season.

Some of them could turn into good QBs in new situations, but none of them other than Lawrence are going to succeed in their current ones.

Definitely agree! My thinking is BBs contract was privately done as was Mayos. He still should have taken the interview request. But you're right he has no play calling on record. Then again this is the patriots could have been a wink, wink agreement between BB, Mayo and RK. Who knows?

Every person who has ever built a roster has made choices that didn’t work out.
It’s a phony argument to expect that the best player is picked every draft choice, it has never been done, by anyone.
A decision maker is a judged on the totality of their decisions and no one has made more good ones, ever.

Belichick got the patriots in this situation by effectively extending the dynasty to go to 5 SBs in 4 years and wining 3 of them.
You apparently would rather have taken an approach like, say the Packers who were in a similar situation in 2012-2015-ish and win NOTHING but are now mediocre or Denver who won nothing and are in the same boat now.

I prefer to have won, and accepted after it was over there would be down times and I don’t need to find a target to blame because reality happened.

Hey there, Ian. If this is under more active discussion elsewhere and you want to shift things around, that's fine by me. i thought it worthy of a thread, but I may well be wrong.

Thank you for ruining your young QB by hiring patricia as OC. Here is a contract extension.

I don’t get it.
Our current offensive coordinator was ranked in the top 3 at the beginning of the year...it's the quarterback. If I remember correctly, Bill instead wanted QB Davis Mills in the 3rd round that year. Outside of drafting receivers, he has a pretty good track record. QB Jones and WR Ju Ju Smith Schuster weren't Bill guys but front-office favorites; Bill should have used his veto power.
