Belichick: September may be an extended pre-season for Patriots

Why should they change their process?

They started 1-3 last year and made the playoffs.

Winning another game in Sept does not make them a better team in January.
Starting 1-3 and making the playoffs is not a blue print toward success. Even so, the team didn’t look bad despite starting with a losing record. The jury is out with this group, there was optimism heading into last season….now? Not so much.

I think another 1-3 start has real potential to send an already self-doubting team into a downward spiral.

Any person who has any experience of betting on the NFL, and really anyone who watches the NFL, should be keenly aware that it's week 5 where teams begin to show their true colors and begin to separate.

I point to the gamblers because they have money on the line and tend to pay more attention to the league as a whole.

This isn't a concept unique to NE.

No but treating Sept as extended preseason is.

Bill is very good at making a team confident in executing. Just takes time

Outside the region.

Sober assessment.
Ted Johnson is a bitter troll. There is a history there.

Everyone knows the NEP had a **** preseason and have a ton of questions going into the season.

For Johnson to take ownership of validating an opinion many have is hilarious.

Hes still finding his footing as a contrarian douchebag sports personality and hes awful at it.

Johnson did not say that Mac Jones looked not ready.

Others have.

They can not afford any more than 3 losses within the first 4 games. There’s a soft spot in the schedule after this where they can rack up some wins, but the 2nd half of the season is brutal.

Sure, Mac and the offense have looked downright bad at times throughout the preseason. There's a number of factors at play which I'm not going to dive into here as they've been discussed plenty elsewhere. You can go ahead and assume that they're going to continue to play exactly as they played on Friday night and have a horrible season. Don't be surprised if most fans of the team are counting on BB, Mac, the OL, and even the rest of the questionable coaches to figure things out and improve over the next month.
I'm sorry your boy Jimmy is staying in SF. I'm sure he would have made up for all the other deficiencies during the first month of the season. Of course, he would have been hurt for the next 3, but would have been a fun September.

The problem is Ted still has valuable nuggets to offer here and there, having played in the NFL especially for New England. But I must say, media negativity toward the Patriots this preseason has been relentless across the board. That, along with dismal performances thus far, has been damn depressing. In my 28 years as a season ticket holder I can't recall a more pessimistic vibe around this team heading into a new season.

I think id accept 1-3 right now if offered. Id jump at 2-2. But we have a great chance to build some momentum beyond the first 4 if we weather that storm which typically is September here

The negativity is completely over the top. I'm all for accurate reporting but there is a minimal amount of perspective.

Johnson will always have some street cred with me and I loved him as a player which makes his ******** much harder to process.

Yeah, Ted's personal hatred of BB is obvious. Then he tries to separate that from acknowledgement of BB's superior coaching ability and it can get confusing, especially when he criticizes where the team is at overall.

You're right about needed perspective not being there. Although, I tend to trust Greg Bedard's takes more than not and he has painted a pretty sad picture overall.

I don’t know why people take every time I post as an opportunity to smack talk. We’re just talking football.
Well you showed up in 2020. That may have something to do with it. Had you been here to talk football during the bleak years in Buffalo you may have been treated different. As it stands you look like someone who shows up just to talk up his team.

As someone who has brought up this specific point not too long ago and actually thinks BB is dead wrong on keeping up this part of his approach to the game:

You are transparent and we both know this isn't true.
