Wow, the people on this forum are going nuts over the preseason. Honestly, how many snaps has Hobson even played so far? And if it's not many, don't you think that might be because, like the other veterans, he's played in a similar system and doesn't need the playing time? Why subject him to injury if he's got the defense down already, as BB said?
What is that makes him so bad--have you seen him using poor technique, misreading plays, missing tackles, or what? Are you just basing all this hoopla on stats?
He's a veteran player with a proven track record of solid play in the NFL. He may not be having the best pre-season ever--I don't know, since I don't bother watching the preaseason games-- but then I doubt the ability of 95% of people on this board to scout out the linebacking position anyway. After all, we have people on here who seriously believe that Ray Ventrone is going to replace Heath Evans, LaMont freaking Jordan doesn't have a place on the team, and Chad Jackson is the next T.O.
Belicheck isn't going to judge Victor Hobson, a veteran 3-4 linebacker of 6 years, by three or four mediocre performances in the pre-season--not when he has years of coach referrals and footage to fall back on. Let's get a grip here folks. The guy gives us some great depth at linebacker. A lot more than some unproven rookie (read: guyton, redd) who's never played in a single regular season game could.
Go to patriots.com and actually look at the depth chart. Hobson is a second-stringer, and he'll likely be subbing in for Bruschi. In that role, he adds tremendous value to the team.
If he fails in the regular season, we cut him and THEN sign one of those rookies.
