Bedard: There was second guessing about Mayo over summer and him getting a second year isn't guaranteed

Shed no tears for Mayo. He's been angling YEARS for a head coaching job -- even undermining the GOAT toward that goal -- naively believing he has what it takes.

While I don't doubt that, let's look at it from Kraft's point of view. He had seen good, young defensive coordinators leaving the Pats for head coaching gigs. Most recently Flores, who was probably the best of the bunch. He wanted to try to avoid losing another who he thought had strong leadership abilities. So he gave him the successor clause. It wasn't a bad idea, it just wasn't thought out very well.

I didn’t see anyone post this during the off-season, but apparently another reason he was hired was because there was a $10M buyout clause had the Pats decided to hire someone else as HC. This was speculation from Bedard.

I dunno, ive been saying for a while that bb’s replacement should not come from the tree. Theyve all been colossal failures besides maybe flores and theyve all had way more experience than mayo. Kraft should have noticed this. I was hoping he saw something special in mayo and willing to give it a chance but this is looking like a huge miss.

I don't know about undermining.. as bill knew about mayos contract and that it had a successor clause in it. Bill was expected to leave on his own terms from coaching. They all had an understanding of what would transpire when Bill left coaching. Anyhow.. I'm resigned to the fact that maybe HC isn't cut for Mayo. It's ok he tried and experienced it.

Mayo's coaching ambitions were ill served by being anointed. He would have done better by serving a conventional apprenticeship at the HS and college level, develop his HC chops away from the limelight.

I wouldn't have minded making Mayo the HC if they did whatever it took to get a legitimate OC, DC, and GM. Instead we have basically all first timers (this is basically AVP's first time calling plays and designing an offense) and there is no one for Mayo to lean on. Pay up for Mike LeFleur from LA under McVay, or Kubiak's kid out in San Francisco. Hell, pay through the nose for Nick Caley, or Zac Robinson. Get an OC who has called plays before and has shown some ability to adjust on the fly. Instead we have a position coach who was likely frozen out the last couple years, and a first time GM.

It was a bad idea simply because Mayo did not demonstrate coaching chops before he was anointed HC. He wasn't a coordinator; heck, he had no experience calling defense during games. I've said it a dozen times: Kraft fell in love with his personal profile and that was it.

That was incent to stay.. the clause making him bills replacement after bill stepped away when that was supposed to happen.. Mayo's before his time. He's at least 2-3 years early.

I would like him as a dc but id prefer a different direction at hc. Hopefully an offensive mind to maximize Drake.

Slowik? Johnson is the more sought after but he will wait for the best opportunity and I believe Cincy will be a better destination in the offseason.

I think both Mayo and Kraft were envisioning something like Tomlin's setup in Pittsburgh where Mayo would just rah-rah the guys before the game and leave the nuts and bolts work to others.

I don't buy this at all. Culture comes from the players and coaches, not from losing. If this were the case, teams wouldn't bounce back from multiple losing seasons and win.

I watched the Red Sox '04 documentary last night and they singled out the cultural differences that made losers into winners. It had to do with individuals and their approach to standards and culture.

Think about the 2 years prior to the '01 Super Bowl. Losing, but behind the scenes creating the culture of champions.

I was worried about that. I don't really care what Mayo did as a volunteer in Israel.

That's kind of why I feel sorry for him. He chose the wrong path and now, because of that choice, the right path is probably no longer available to him.

And being an insurance salesman isn't looking so good these days...
