Bedard: There was second guessing about Mayo over summer and him getting a second year isn't guaranteed

Definitely came from someone high up in the Pats.

I am of the opinion that HC and GM should be married at the hip. If a team underperforms and you want to fire one of them, fire both. That way they both have the same goal and none of this backstabbing BS.
Holy crap !!! You are on to something … it’s coming to me !! Are you suggesting?? Naw!! Are you suggesting … that they should be the … can’t be … the same person!??

Bedard is buddies with Wolf.

This is Wolf leaking that Mayo is getting canned in a few weeks if he doesn't fix this ****.
What a shame. The plug needs to be pulled on the Wolf experiment faster than Mayo IMO.

Kraft is responsible for all of this. Firstly the way he treated Bill on his way out, but more importantly the complete arrogance and hubris to hand the keys to a guy who had almost zero coaching experience without doing even the most cursory of searches. He then did the same with the front office.

Mayo is proving to be completely inept at almost every aspect of being a head coach - which some of us predicted. The only question is whether Kraft will swallow his pride and fire him after year 1.

If it were easy to find posts, I'd bring receipts showing how this was going to be a disaster from the day he was hired and the media/fans calling for him to be gone by mid season.

Unless Maye has a collapse, I think he'll help Mayo's cause stealing a few games - but not much as this team is really bad.

Three things I would like to see this season: 1) Maye continues to improve (despite the OL, lack of offensive talent, and coaching staff). 2) Maye comes out of this season 100% uninjured and completely healthy. 3) Mayo and this coaching staff (and possibly Wolf and Groh Jr.) get replaced with a highly competent coaching and personnel staff. I doubt I'll get the 3rd, but the first two are a great place to start.

I just watched the video. Bedard also mentions Mapu blowing coverages all over the place. It's about time someone notices it! I know some people want this guy to be good, but as @captain stone would say....McPoo sucks!

The dude is Chris Carter.

Mayo is also going the Matt Patricia route in Detroit blaming players when they as HC's haven't proven anything - more so with Mayo.

As a proponent of letting it play out for the season before deciding on Mayo, if it continues bad the whole year, move on ASAP.
Ben Johnson MIGHT love to have Maye to work with. Maye makes this a desirable spot, he may save the franchise by not only playing QB but by getting a good coach interested in coming here. But I Still Hope Mayo finds his footing and succeeds.

I think wolf has a longer leash....he gets 2-3 years minimum

The way may is handling this team, the way they are showing up/not showing up each week, i think hes one and done barring a huge turnaround
I don't think it needs to be a huge turnaround. We aren't fixing 1-6 at this point. But if it turns into 1-16 anything is on the table.

Here's where I think a small turnaround can help. Maye is 0-2 if we can get Maye a few wins and if he continues to look good then I think everyone comes back. Maye gets at least 3 wins the rest of the way and we at least would end the year with the same record as last year. 4 or 5 would not only save everyone but completely change the narrative. Less than 3 and I think anything could be in the table but I still think they'd be hesitant to give up on everyone so quickly.

just waiting on Kraft to say Mayo has the full support of ownership...
Dang Pape, if I had a Thousand Dollars for everytime I heard an owner say that, then the $6,500 cost of the new furnace we have to install would be covered and then some! Actually, that would be the case even if we added Central Air!!!

I thought he looked pretty good in his first game this year not so much the next 2. He still needs some time and everyone has looked bad the past two weeks. I'd even call them Gonzalez's worst 2 games too. White has disappeared, Jones is struggling, Dugger too. Hard to say what's going on individually when everyone seems to be regressing.

I'm usually hesitant to do this I even defended Matty P but the problems are so much across the board it's hard not to look at Mayo and Covington. But I guess maybe everyone has just suddenly become soft.

Weren’t most of the assistant coaching hires on Wolf’s recommendations since Mayo didn’t have many outside connections? That’s not looking promising either.
I think it should be viewed more like - Wolf had to try to finagle things because Mayo had zero pull in the league. And how much pull do you think Wolf himself actually had when he wasn’t named EVP of personnel until months later?

The GM’s job should be to land on the HC himself and then have the HC build his own staff. It’s kind of clownish to hire the HC first, then ask the GM-in-waiting who doesn’t actually have the title yet to go find a staff for that HC because he can’t build one himself. Good luck finding anyone who actually wants to come. It’s no surprise they ended up with the staff they have. Kind of a shock that Springer has actually been pretty good, and there are a couple other minor bright spots.

I love to hate Kraft, but man - y'all have incredibly colorful and boundless imaginations that paint very detailed interpretations of Bedard's boring non-comment, something anyone could say and not be proven wrong on. It's impressive. I do appreciate the nuance of each take.

Everyone is fireable after their first year, regardless of its a good idea or not. Everyone. And yes, everyone gets second guessed.

If Mayo wasn't second guessed at times, then I'd consider their search process to be way too streamlined and simplified. Give yourself every reason to make a big decision, which includes being acutely critical of the choice before signing off.

lol - not same person.

Marte wasn't good last season, but people would point to a play or two to justify his overall play. He's got really bad awareness and he isn't athletically quick enough to react well to plays. He has no business being a FS. I couldn't believe the dude ran back in pass coverage after watching the QB hand off the ball to the RB.

Dugger had his worst season as a pro in 2023 because he didn't have McCourty and Phillips allowing him to play in the box.

Jonathon Jones has been bad for years.

Gonzalez will struggle because they don't have competent S's.

It feels like there has been a differing of opinion on the timeline of Drake starting. I feel like Mayo wanted him to start early and did his best to tiptoe around saying it a couple times whereas Wolf and AVP wanted him to sit. Wouldn't be surprised if that was the first impasse and Wolf didn't appreciate Mayo's comments on the state of the roster the other day.

Not that I think it would happen but if Mayo go canned who would be the interim head coach? lol This is easily the least experienced staff in the league. I would assume it would be AVP but there is a chance he is the worst of the bunch.
Yeah I am guessing Wolf wanted to sit Maye longer, and so did AVP, but Mayo pushed to play him sooner to try to win games and save his own butt. I think Wolf probably was expecting Mayo to be able to grind out a few sporadic wins with Brissett plus a solid defense, while maintaining a good culture that let young players blossom at their own pace. Instead, the culture has turned to **** and Mayo wanted to get Maye out there to help his job security and get the players off his back.

You Belicheck fans are hilarious rooting for Mayo to fail. If Mayo went on to be a great HC that would have helped Belicheck's legacy.

If Mayo fails and is fired, then it cements the fact that Belicheck failed to ever produce a successful NFL HC from his coaching tree. In other words, Bill's coaching style is flawed and fails to be successful unless you have the GOAT at QB or GOAT at LB.
