Maybe this answer plays into the Cassel situation:

Q: Looking beyond 2009, do you anticipate the possibility of an uncapped year in 2010 having an impact on your decisions at all?

BB: Absolutely. Yeah. Absolutely. In terms of planning? Yes. That's the way it is right now so you have to look at that. If things didn't change, that's the way it would be. Now, things could always change, but yeah. Whatever the rules are for the salary cap – as far as how things are counted, and where different monies are allocated, and what your budget is, or what your cap is – however you want to look at it, yeah. Absolutely, you have to look at that.

If Brady is not fully healthy and ready for action in 2009 why not sign Cassel to a cap friendly deal for the upcoming season with an escalating salary structure going forward?

I believe Brady will be healthy and ready to go but if further evaluation by the Pats team doctors tells them he most likely will not be ready then why go into a season with a question mark at QB if you don't have to?

If Brady is not fully healthy and ready for action in 2009 why not sign Cassel to a cap friendly deal for the upcoming season with an escalating salary structure going forward?

The last capped season has rules preventing moving a high percentage of the compensation into the future, I believe there is a maximum year-to-year gain of 30%, and some future guaranteed money must be put on the cap in 2009. So a cap-friendly deal wouldn't be nearly as lucrative as what Cassel could get elsewhere.
