In wake of 18-point win, Bill Belichick sounds alarm for his staff: ‘We have to coach better than we did tonight’

Some very telling comments.

Defensively they gave us a lot of problems. We had six first-downs in the first half. We threw up a couple of prayers and came down with them, made a couple of good catches with Chris [Hogan] and Julian. We just didn’t have any consistency at all offensively, couldn’t run it or throw it very well.”

The Patriots were actually reeling before the half, leading just 14-13 and sensing the crowd at Gillette get a bit more nervous than anyone expected coming in. The Patriots were able to get three points to take a 17-13 halftime lead on a 19-yard field goal from Stephen Gostkowski.

“Well, it was good to be able to get the last opportunity there,” Belichick said. “We drove it down. We got the ball to the one-inch line but couldn’t get it in. I might’ve thought about going for it on fourth-down, but when we lost yards there on third-down, the ball was on about the – I don’t know, one, one and a half, whatever it was – instead of on the one-inch line, then I didn’t really think very much about going for it at that point. It’s good to get the three points. We had the ball to start the second half because we deferred to start the game.

“But it would’ve been nice to get seven. We had a couple of good chances. We just didn’t get it done. Again, like a lot of things tonight, if we don’t improve in those situations the next time we play then it’ll probably be the last time we play. We’ve got to take advantage of our opportunities. We’ve got to coach and execute better. Hopefully we’ll be able to get that done this week.

I saw the presser and I also noticed the comment, those were some Hail Mary passes that Jules catched, technically speaking we had an off night in offense, im confident the coaching staff and players will work hard all week to address those things.

They have a tendency to look flat after bye weeks. Credit Houstons defense though they're legit. That pass rush will be insane next year if Watt can make a full recovery.

Think about it. Who knows the Pats offense better than Crennel and BOB? And they implemented that knowledge to scheme with a very good defense ( though I still think Denver's is a bit better). And they still gave up 377 yards and 27 points, mostly due to Hogan and Edelman outplaying the Texans secondary, plus some nice deep passes by Brady. Still, he's right. They didn't game plan well enough on offense.

It's always an advantage when you can walk away from a poorly coached/executed game with a 3 score win.

That being said, play time is over!!!

This is good. Bb has plenty of ammo for the pats to have them come out firing on all cylinders next week.

How about we give credit to the Texans:
- Texans had the #1 best defense in the entire league this year
- Romeo Crennel is a 3time Super Bowl winning defensive coordinator who knows Patriot schemes
- O'Brien is a former Pats coordinator who knows what they are trying to do, especially in the middle of the field

Is it just me, or do the Patiots tend to come out a little flat after experiencing a bye week?

Honest question here

With there only being 1-2 BYEs every year you will not get any in depth answer apart from the anecdotal stuff people want to connect.

Yes, we lost against Seattle after the BYE this year, but last year we beat the Cowboys directly after the BYE and two years ago it was the Colts who we took apart.

It's more likely coincidence than a pattern but who knows..

I'm wondering how much these coaching interviews and offers for guys like McD and Patricia are distractions for the gameplanning and focus.

I still think there should be a window when people can officially sit down and talk with potential candidates and players. Not before important playoff games. On one hand you have teams still contending and on the other, the lesser teams....well their season is already over and need to start rebuilding as soon as possible. It's a slippery slope really.

I'm reading this quote from BB in OP's post as BB sending a message to McD to keep his eye on the ball:

Possibly. But sometimes players need to get a yard when they need a yard. its easy to keep blaming the playcaller but players also need to make plays. McDaniels cant do anything if Develin cant get an inch or the oline cant block for 1 yard for blount.

To what, then, do you think BB was referring when, specifically talking about that series of plays, he says "We have to coach better."?

He says that all the time - he does not single people out for blame.

To me that quote means, it'll be the last time "the team" will play, because, if they play like that again, they will have a loss, and be out of the playoffs.

Team blows out opponent despite not playing particularly well.
BB tosses the turd in the punch bowl.

There's nothing new here, folks.
