    Rather significant on several levels.

First and foremost being that the defense can reset after protection is called. This would explain why so many of the blitzes last night had an open man with a clear path to the QB.

I think Lazar meant where = were.

Lots of well deserved trust put into Van Noy, Hightower, and Collins.

That is so good to hear. That means that beyond their athletic abilities, they also know what they are doing out there.

The level of experience on the D might be getting up to where the Dynasty I squad was. High, DMac and Chung in particular, even Harmon, have played a lot of Patriot football. Collins and Van Noy aren't newbies either. Would love to know what level of decision-making autonomy those guys have.

Are they more like the indestructible T-101 or do they possess more of the shape-shifting abilities of the T-1000??

I think Lazar is onto something, the defense acting as its own DC would be historically unprecedented, and flat out unfair- a huge advantage in that headset communication is shut off with 15 seconds left on the snap clock.

This would mean that once the offense locks in on their playcall, adjustments, and protection, the defense is free to adjust right up to the snap.

Yes. I’d think OCs will find this concerning. (in the Darth Vader sense of “concern”)

Also seems this is the perfect antidote to McVay’s giving Goff the protection call just before the headset cuts off. And the chess game continues...

It is a combination of elite coaching + prep work+ attention to detail AND a stacked group of versatile and talented players that mostly buy into the grind.

To me it really is beautiful as it highlights the nuances of football I enjoy most.

And here we are as fans watching history being made yet again. This ****ing team.

This is so mind boggling that I think something is lost in translation. BB allows his players to do their own thing? What is the world coming to? So if the defense are rather adjusting to what you are doing and for most of the time it is random, how do you study them?

    How atypical is this, though?

If it was the type of unequaled post comms shutoff advantage that you're making it sound I cannot imagine a scenario where BB would divulge it unless forced to.

I am sure that BB and his co-coordinators, BB jr. and Mayo are the one that come up the general game plan for the defense for a given week, as well as a handful of playcalls tailored for that particular week, BUT the defense does have the unprecedented freedom to "audible" out of the call if they recognize the play, or if they think something else would be better.

Not as simple as it seems- if you make one adjustment- e.g., moving the blitz to the strong side, you also have to make a chain of adjustments, so that the entire field is accounted for.

There's a whole different level of trust, communication, and football IQ at work here. It's historically unprecedented.

    My Take:

    This is not new.

In the First Dynasty, BB let Bru, Willie,Roman, Vrabes, Rodney and Ted Johnson call their own blitzes. They were all experienced and knew the situations. However they were a bit more conservative in nature.

The difference this year is they are blitzing more because their man to man coverage and safety play is playing at an all-time-great level.

With that said, I think BB is playing some mind games with future opponents.

That’s the beauty of it. It’s not random. It’s specific to what you do. On each and every single play. Not to anything you’ve ever seen before. How do you study that?

100% this. One of the secret advantages to the BB mystique is that opposing coaches outsmart themselves and make dumb decisions. This will only play into it.

And thank you NFL films also for scaring future QBs with that "ghosts" leak.

I kinda think that another major point of this being do-able with good success is the secondary...

They are so good at everything, but specially Man-Coverage, that it's easy to to change zones/coverages in play.

If those guys dont have the ability to lockdown pretty much anyone, they wouldn't be able to change things willy nilly, not matter how their communication is.

As much as I love our trio of LBs, the truly incredible corps are the DBs

I’ve said it many times, but I’ll say it again, I’m sure glad Patricia is gone.

    I love the downhill defense.

This reminds me a lot of those 03 and 04 Ds where the player's had the trust to call their own number and make big play after big play in the most critical moments. I thought I would never see a D like that again.
