I just checked again and haven't seen any mention of this transaction yet.

Also, I would question how much Smith would know about the actual gameplan the Bills have put in for the Patriots given the time frame he was cut in. He would certainly know personnel and some general things but not enough to make much impact.

Exactly. The Bills (like many others in the NFL) think that BB MUST be doing something illegal or underhanded because they just can't believe that anybody could get so much out of so many non-stars. This 7th round pick may have known some general tendencies of the Bills but the game plan is installed during the week before the game. He knew nothing of the particulars.

Good one Nem

I think they cut bam, signed smith, signed gabriel, signed bam to the ps, then (if this is true) cut smith. I think the arrival of gabriel was the reason for the release of smith. Action Jackson's performance could also factor in.
Actually Gabriel was signed before Bam was cut...In fact Bam was on teh 53 original...then Smith was brought in and Bam cut...Gabriel was on the team a day or so BEFORE Smith was brought in. Maybe it has to do with injuries...Andrews??? Or maybe he was just NOT good...and one can not even find that transaction...

Why is it so hard to believe that BB just thought BAM was better?
Now we have a PS spot open (P Cobbs?)

I haven't seen anything out there on this either--and totally agree, how much would Smith know anyway?

If Smith clears waivers, I bet he takes Bam's spot on the practice squad.

The answer could be a lot simpler and more innocent.

BB might have brought Smith in expecting him to compete for the PR role and backup at WR. After a week up close, there could be any number of things to turn him off: work ethic, ability to pick up the offense, hands... hell, even personality.

Bam is a known quantity and a great prospect. Risking losing him to another team by waiving him is not worth a one-week advantage against an inferior opponent. I think BB/SP were hoping for more from Smith, and then didn't see it.

It isn't all that complicated.

Maroney missed a lot of practice last week. He was one of our KR guys in preseason. We cut a WR who isn't a returner and signed a WR whose value was as a returner. It was an insurance move.

Maroney got healthy, we resigned the guy who catches the ball because we have no use for the returner anymore.

The guy wasn't even there for Buffalo's preparation for the Pats game so he wouldn't help much in that area anyway.

Amen. It's also possible that he was largely insurance against Willie Andrews being out of action for Sunday, and that Andrews is now ready to go.

I had forgotten Andrews being banged up as well.

So both KR guys and the PR are hurt and had missed practice in the days before the move was made.

Both got healthy and are good to go so it is obvious to cut Smith and resign Bam who is a better pass catcher than Smith.

Turn on the Wayback Machine...

Back in the gay 90s, we signed and cut and signed Troy "Downtown" Brown. My man Bam is the 21st century release of this package.
Go for it bro!

if this is true I'm happy. Now we get to watch Bam blossom, can't wait. Bam is gonna become one of Brady's favorite targets

Hopefully

are you all missing the point? Belechick did the equivalent of a kick below the belt. signed smith got the bills gameplan from him and then sent him packing.

be proud. your team is built on a long history of integrity and hard work.

Unlike your Bills, the Patriots do everything they can WITHIN LEAGUE RULES to win. It's common practice anyway, haven't you seen this done before? Hello?

Reiss just confirmed Bam is on the 53

Uhhh, Bam was a returner.

Returning a couple kicks and punts (and not doing a good job of either) in the last preseason game while everyone else was hurt does not make him a returner.

He did as good a job as most of the other guys who did it in the preseason. He is a returner.

Woohoo! Welcome to the 53, Bam Bam!

Seconding the note that Reiss has in his blog, confirming Smith''s release.

I think the Buffalo blogger is making far too much out of this. Whether the Patriots would ask Smith any questions about gameplans or not, the notion that a marginal player such as Smith would grant the Patriots the advantage they were looking for against a determined but inferior opponent is pretty far-fetched. And it seems especiallly silly in light of the chance they would have taken in losing Childress...however, perhaps someone will have a better argument than the one put forward by the Buffalo blogger and our offensive poster from the land of the 13-ft snow drifts.
