Bad news from Peter King

Seriously, I think King is a pretty decent one. If it were Tomase, fair enough, but lighten up. I enjoy King's column, even if his rumors aren't regularly spot on.

The original premise is silly, but there was this nugget of information in there:

At 137, the Eagles still had about 10 of their gaggle of 30 picks left. And a veteran player appealed to them. They saw the Patriots take, and keep, two corners from the 2008 draft, and now, in the second round of this draft, they saw Bill Belichick take UConn cornerback Darius Butler. "We knew the Patriots signed Shawn Springs too, so we said, 'Let's try to get Ellis Hobbs from them.' We talked, Andy and Bill, and Bill didn't want to do it. But a while later we called again, and maybe they thought there was a chance they were going to lose him anyway. I don't know. But a starting cornerback for two fives -- we just couldn't turn that down.''

Only Bill basically outlined the same scenario surrounding that deal in his Monday post draft visit with WEEI. The Hobbs haters won't like the fact that it this wasn't all part of a BB master plan to rid his team of a scourge. But that scenario would have entailed his drafting Butler at any cost, which he passed on through 39 picks. And even after drafting Butler he had to mull this deal over. $$$ (regaining financial flexibility to sign someone else) and value (like the ability to draft another OL in the 4th) were the obvious tipping points if you have the capacity to look at the deal rationally. It's all about value and risk/reward with Bill. He obviously knows what the risk entails as he's watched CB's drop like flies and FA's disappoint at the position over the course of the last 4 seasons. But he apparently concluded the short term risk was reasonably worth the potential short and long term reward.

Indeed. The Hobbs deal never struck me as part of some master plan/scheme. It seemed every bit as spontaneous for them as it was surprising for the NE fans. I just hope Hobbs doesn't go on to have an All-Pro year/career after this. I would feel terrible about that, especially since I've never been sold on Springs and I still have major doubts about Bodden.

The DB situation is now in a complete state of flux, and anyone who doesn't see the possible dangers there really needs to look again. It could be that this defensive backfield will be much improved over last year, and that wouldn't take all that much doing. On the other hand, whether people care to admit it or not, it's also possible that this defensive backfield could be considerably worse than last season. That scenario is just 1-2 injuries and slow developing rookies/2nd year players away.

Anythings possible, but I don't see Ellis being an All-Pro. He got a bad rap here, but he was solid. I think in the right system, he could put up numbers, but numbers don't mean he's playing any better. Just that perhaps his assignments are different.

I would guess if Ellis makes the pro-bowl, it'll be because his coaches encourage him to take more chances and he ends up with some decent INT numbers. But I don't think we have to worry about him being an elite corner anytime soon.

Agreed on some level, but I would have to say the cornerback situation has a greater chance of improving than it does falling behind. I don't like using injuries in a discussion of future performance predictions, because most units on any team would be hampered greatly by a couple of injuries. If we lost Moss or Welker (or god forbid both), our WR's would be a weak point as well.

Our starters last year were Hobbs and O'Neal, who was signed last minute and played awful. Wheatley was injured, and he and Wilhite were rookies anyway. Sure, things can happen, but I have to believe we're in way better position than we were starting last year. And even then, we managed a halfway decent defense that went 11-5 with an offense run by a QB with no experience.

The way I read that Hobbs thing was that they were happy with the 5 CB and didn't go into the draft planning on taking a CB high. If so, that is good news for how they see Wheatley and Wilhite. However at #41 they liked Butler enough that they simply couldn't pass on him any longer. This would also be good news if true. However after taking him they had 6 they liked. They could have kept all 6 and waited to see if an injury happened. Or even rostered all 6 and just had good depth. But, instead, went the trade route. But, again, I think main reason for it all is they were happy with what they had but just couldn't pass on Butler any longer. If so, it's all good.
