Backup QB follows strong start with a blowout loss to the Dolphins (2001)

I think people are hoping too much that history repeats itself and trying to create these crazy trends to make themselves feel better.

There is a reason Cassel has been a life long backup, because he's not that good of a QB. He's not terrible, but if people really think he's going to duplicate Brady 01, they're just looking through rose colored glasses.

Sure, the defense looked awful, and the pass protection was bad, but a big chunk of the offense rested on Cassel. He makes poor decisions, doesn't seem to read the blitz well, and can't throw a decent pass under pressure if his life depended on it.

There are always LOADS of ignorant football fans.
Yes, some of us knew Brady had it pre MVP Moe Lewis because we watched Brady completely outplay Bledsoe in training camp in Smithfield. Then we watched Brady help win games. Bledsoe had gone 5-11 in 2000 and 0-2 to start 2001.

I understand Brady showed great promise, and there were definitely things to be excited about. But no one could have known that he had IT in the sense that he would blossom into a HOF QB. Matt Cassel has positives as well, and from what we hear from his teammates, former coaches etc. has some of IT.

Brady had games where he looked terrible, where it didn't look like he had any of IT.

oh shut up. cassell is not to brady, what brady was to bledsoe. not even close

Good stats, let's see where they are after week 16.

I'd have to say that my only true disappointment following this game is of the reaction of the fans here (and I don't mean the Foxboro fans that booed the team at halftime - I'd have done the same to spur them on)

Seem like a lot of fans get way too high after a win and way too low after a loss.

Do people really have such short memories, or are they really that fickle? Maybe just spoiled after last year when there was no regular season loss to contend with?

Anyone who has followed the team before last year knows that there's games your team is supposed to win that it invariably loses - and games it is supposed to lose, that it invariably wins.

This game doesn't lock us out of the Playoffs anymore than last week's win locked us in.

No. Read my lips: "Matt Cassel is no Tom Brady."

While there is plenty of blame to spread around for this stinker, particularly for the defense, this was one of the worst performances by a Patriots quarterback I have seen in a long time.
ding ding ding.....we have a winner....please...let NO one mistake Matt Cassel for Tom Brady ....ever again.......Brady is a legend......Cassel will be gone next season,.....case closed

We do get way to high and way to low after a loss, but again the Defense was very disappointing, and there are some alarming things that we saw in training camp, that have not been corrected, hopeful they could correct them after the bye..

How long did it take you to come to that mind-blowing conclusion?

Seriously, Cassel won't be a Patriot next year, and that's even if he DOES lead the team to the playoffs.

Hey genius, what was Brady's stat line in the 2nd start of his career (against Miami btw)??

No one said Cassel is or would become a HOF QB of Brady's caliber, btw. Is that what you are expecting out of all QBs?

What is the point of comparing Cassel's stats to Brady's over the first two games of their respective careers other than to imply that Cassel could be another Brady? I hope I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that Matt is just another mediocre benchwarmer who was thrust into the starting spotlight and will return to obscurity once this season is over.

I unfortunately agree but would LOVE to be proven wrong and cassel turns out to be a quality starter

No it's not to imply that he could be another Brady. Brady is the GOAT. It's to put perspective on it. Even the GOAT had some struggles early in his career. More of a cry to give Cassel AND this team more time before making knee-jerk judgements.

We don't know how good or bad Cassel will eventually be this year and throughout his career. We cannot possibly tell based on his 2 starts.

I agree with your 2nd paragraph, but people have a right to express their opinions here, even if they are more in the realm of prediction. That's what discussion boards are for. And you might want to back off on the name calling just a wee bit. I know a lot of us are upset about what we saw today, but showing a bit of respect for our fellow posters would be beneficial.

Hmmm - can history really be repeating itself?

After Brady's notched his first win as a starter, he and the team struggled to a blowout loss against the Dolphins.

That wake up call helped pull the team together - though Brady had a few more growing pains along the way to his first Super Bowl.

Just thought that might provide a little perspective to those that were hoping for a 19-0 season!

very true
everyone thought the season was lost after that huge loss to the fish in 01

problem with this analogy is our defense in 01 was WAY better than this yr's defense
ive been saying it for a few yrs, and ill continue to say it..our linebackers just arent that good anymore

This thread is a joke.

Anyone who thinks that

Brady = Cassel

Homerism

You are right and I apologize.

I'm fine with opinions and criticisms, it just irks me when people make sweeping statements, try to pass their opinion as fact, or vehemently argue an opinion that is factually proven wrong or has a terribly ignorant basis.

I think these stats are funny because people are using them to try and feel better about what they are seeing.

Why isn't anyone comparing Brady and Cassel's first start under center? They both won but Brady lead a team that put 44 points up on the board. With the way Cassel and the defense are playing do you honestly think the Pats will have a game where they put up 44 points on anyone?

I don't see any heart on this team right now. They seem utterly deflated. Other differences I see between these Pats and the '01 team... the '01 team didn't just come off of a VERY long and trying season. There was no spygate, there was no dissapointment in the fact that they lost a SB and the perfect season. There were no teams out for redemption.

The fact remains, Brady > Cassel x1,000,000,000 and the whole argument that Brady wasn't Brady then is stupid. Brady has always had 'IT' which is something that Cassel doesn't have and never will. The team rallied around Brady and most importantly they didn't have the expectations that this team has with Cassel for numerous reasons.

Once again

Does anyone realize that the defense gave up 21 points in the first half. The Pats scored 6 points in the first half this week and last week.

The defense gave up 21 points!!!! 38 for the entire game.

Why is everyone talking about Cassel?
