I apologize if this has been talked about but can anyone shed some light on why he is on the NFI. I haven't come across anything yet. Is it his heart? Conditioning?

I believe it was reported as an "illness" which could mean anything from the flu to a heart problem. Let's hope it's closer to the former.

I thought it was a legal issue he had.

According to Reiss on twitter:

"With DL Armond Armstead (non-football illness list), BB says this morning his absence is different than his past health-related issue."

read this as armond arrested nearly had a freakout there. hope the dude is okay.

#Patriots have released statement on health status of DL Armond Armstead: "Armond Armstead had surgery to treat an infection...

"...A timetable has not been set for his return to football.”

Speedy recovery.

So his heart condition caused him to lose a year and not be drafted. And now he has had surgery for an infection and we don't know when he will be back. But, he's in great shape.

First he needs to be in camp to practice and become a part of the defense.

It does not seem that he will a major part of defense this year, certainly not early. This year's salary was fully guaranteed as well as half of next year's.

Yeah I'm not sure how much we can really know at this point, but the early indicators don't sound too great--at least in terms of starting the year on time.

It doesn't sound like he'd be ready to go anytime soon and will definitely be a step or two behind due to missing most or all of camp. He may even be a candidate for in season PUP depending on how soon he is able to return or when the surgery may have taken place.

All we can hope for is a quick recovery, and some of the other players to step up on the line. I know I've said it before, but damn I do have some concerns about the defensive line this year. Maybe we'll see an addition or two brought in due to roster cuts etc as added competition.

But it is BETTER than last year. Wilfork and Kelly are not only starters but very good starters. Armstead is an unknown and injured, but could be good.

Last season all we had was Love/Deaderick next to Wilfork as starters...

I'd definitely agree with the thought of Tommy Kelly potentially being an improvement next to Wilfork, sure. As long as he can stay healthy and motivated, his sheer talent and size alone is definitely an improvement there.

It's the depth as a whole that I am concerned about, and that was true even when we still had Deaderick/Love. I'm not one of those guys whining about the losses of Deaderick and Love--believe me. I just don't think the depth as a whole unit has been improved upon at all personally.

We have one improvement with Kelly, and a whole bunch of unknowns. Depth and talent is certainly still a valid concern, although worrying about it isn't going to do any good. Hopefully some of the other players step up.

We have one improvement with Kelly, and a whole bunch of unknowns. I'd have liked to see another player or two brought in or drafted on the line, but *****ing about it isn't going to do any good. I'm simply voicing my concerns, which have been the same for the past couple of seasons.

An overall lack of talent and depth on the defensive line is my next biggest concern aside from wide receiver of course, just due to the unknown factor alone. Hopefully someone steps up and provides an interior pass rush.

My thesis is NOT about the interior DL. It is about the whole Defense.

But I recall a few years ago, when it was Mayo and a bunch of hopeful scrubs as our LBs. Last year we finally had three starter capable LBs with #1 Mayo, #2 Spikes and #1 Hightower who all looked liked they merited those premium selections. This season we have added #2 Collins and first reserve Fletcher is back. We may even have a sixth starter capable if A Wilson is considered to be a coverage OLB. No more room for the ST-only guys like Kout, Rivera etc.

At CB we now know have three starters, and 2 guys who should be capable too, in Dowling and rookie Logan Ryan, before we get to a ST-only like Cole, who saw snaps in the AFCCG and got torched. More depth, now.

At secondary last season we were seeking another S starter to go with McCourty. Now we have Adrian Wilson, Tavon Wilson, Steve Gregory and rookie Duran Harmon, from which to select another genuine capable Safety, before turning to ST-only guys like Ebner.

I agree. I like our DL starters, but depth is lacking. Of course, we COULD have zero injuries, and a couple of the backups could step up.

At DL, we have Jones, Wilfork, Kelly and Ninkovich and no reliable backups.

Frankly, with TK in the fold, I believe he and VW will form a starting interior grouping that will be far better than anything the Pats trotted out onto the field last year. And, it's the starters that matter most to me.

After these two I have some reservations with the depth but rationalize such concerns knowing that these guys are considered depth players for a reason. And really, is having Armstead (or even Forston or Vellano) as a backup interior DL now any worse than having Deaderick or Brace or Love in that role last year?

Beyond the big guys I look at rest of the DL as being manned by hybrid DE/LB types that should be, far and away, better than what the Pats had at their disposal last year. Presuming that guys named Jones, Hightower, Bequette, Benard and Francis make the expected jump with an added year of experience in the system.

And let's not diminish the role, of what should be exponentially improved secondary play, on the well being of this years D.

If you put it that way, yes I prefer Deaderick and Love as backups. I would feel much better with Wilfork, Kelly, Love and Deaderick than with our current group.

However that is not the way I see it. Kelly replaces Love as a starter, a clear upgrade. I see that backups as week last year, and weak again.

That seems a lot to ask for.

As I said I'm far more concerned about the improvement in the starting spot alongside VW than I am at what may, or may not, be a downgrade at the backup spot.

They all need not improve to be better than last year. Just Jones improving will do it for me. And, should Bequette and Hightower continue to improve as they appear to be doing, then it's gravy.
