Speedy recovery.
Yeah I'm not sure how much we can really know at this point, but the early indicators don't sound too great--at least in terms of starting the year on time.
It doesn't sound like he'd be ready to go anytime soon and will definitely be a step or two behind due to missing most or all of camp. He may even be a candidate for in season PUP depending on how soon he is able to return or when the surgery may have taken place.
All we can hope for is a quick recovery, and some of the other players to step up on the line. I know I've said it before, but damn I do have some concerns about the defensive line this year. Maybe we'll see an addition or two brought in due to roster cuts etc as added competition.
But it is BETTER than last year. Wilfork and Kelly are not only starters but very good starters. Armstead is an unknown and injured, but could be good.
Last season all we had was Love/Deaderick next to Wilfork as starters...
I'd definitely agree with the thought of Tommy Kelly potentially being an improvement next to Wilfork, sure. As long as he can stay healthy and motivated, his sheer talent and size alone is definitely an improvement there.
It's the depth as a whole that I am concerned about, and that was true even when we still had Deaderick/Love. I'm not one of those guys whining about the losses of Deaderick and Love--believe me. I just don't think the depth as a whole unit has been improved upon at all personally.
We have one improvement with Kelly, and a whole bunch of unknowns. I'd have liked to see another player or two brought in or drafted on the line, but *****ing about it isn't going to do any good. I'm simply voicing my concerns, which have been the same for the past couple of seasons.
An overall lack of talent and depth on the defensive line is my next biggest concern aside from wide receiver of course, just due to the unknown factor alone. Hopefully someone steps up and provides an interior pass rush.

And really, is having Armstead (or even Forston or Vellano) as a backup interior DL now any worse than having Deaderick or Brace or Love in that role last year?
Presuming that guys named Jones, Hightower, Bequette, Benard and Francis make the expected jump with an added year of experience in the system.
As I said I'm far more concerned about the improvement in the starting spot alongside VW than I am at what may, or may not, be a downgrade at the backup spot.If you put it that way, yes I prefer Deaderick and Love as backups. I would feel much better with Wilfork, Kelly, Love and Deaderick than with our current group.
However that is not the way I see it. Kelly replaces Love as a starter, a clear upgrade. I see that backups as week last year, and weak again.
They all need not improve to be better than last year. Just Jones improving will do it for me. And, should Bequette and Hightower continue to improve as they appear to be doing, then it's gravy. That seems a lot to ask for.
