Are you supporting Wes or against him?

What a player might possibly do in the future is, naturally, heavily influenced by, and largely based upon, what he's done in the past.

Sure, use his past performances to project what he can do for us in the future. I'm all for that. I was merely responding to your earlier post that mentioned how we fans should support Welker no matter what because of how wildy underpaid he was on his last contract. That fact should have no bearing on his future contract.

Your position is silly. First, I didn't say that Welker should be supported "no matter what". Second, of course you should take Welker's getting underpaid in his last contract into account. You'd sure as hell take a player's getting overpaid into account when deciding whether or not to support him in a contract negotiation, after all.

this makes no sense......otherwise, thepats will really be screwed when it is time to back up the truck for gronk

Is he running for office?

Fully support Welker. He's been the most productive offensive player not named Tom Brady over the past 5 years. He has earned the money. And he is not threatening to hold out if he doesn't get a long term deal. I think we should pay him and save some cap space in the process as well. But that's up to the agents and management to hash out.

Wondering how many people are supporting Wes Welker during this time and how many people are against him. My lasting memory of him right now is the play in the superbowl and you'll have a hard time finding me feel sorry for someone who will make over $9 million next year. At the same time he has been a great player who probably deserved a little more in the past. I do feel like he's probably has the most value on the field for us. Where do you stand on this situation?

LOL. Okay guy, I can see how you can just keep this going. Not taking the bait. I'm done.

Smart move to quit while you're way behind and fading fast.

LOL.....you're the one who is out to lunch...

hmmm.....yes, yes......let pay him back for outperforming his contract!!!

the line up gronk, hernandez, and every other guy who outplayed his contract

extremly lame

:confused2:

Shouldn't you be off crying about DeOssie? Condon began by responding to one of my posts, and then he fled for the hills when I exposed the ridiculousness of his argument.

It is what it is.

I'm a bit surprised at how emotional people are over this issue (though debates over his value are certainly worthwhile). I tend to agree that this is just a standard part of how things are done these days. Here's an excerpt from Reiss's post on the ESPN interview:

“I just feel that this was the best, really the only, leverage I had is to take this route,” he told ESPN Boston Radio. “It’s not a route I thought I’d ever take, just because that’s not me. It’s just kind of the spot I’ve been put in.”

Would anything shy of a long-term deal convince him to report without a contract?

“Yeah. It could, just depending on what their mood it, where they’re at … what kind of progress we make,” Welker said.

I don't feel like Welker is being belligerently greedy here or obnoxious (like Revis), and I don't sense he's whole-heartedly into things like holdouts. Life's been good to Wes, much of it earned, and he knows it. But he's in an NFL culture that can't let people just be happy in their own bubble. Also, the Pats have professional negotiators who will use whatever tools they can, and Welker has a right to do the same. It all just has to play out.

Welker is looking at his last opportunity to land a big contract, so he wants what's best for him and his family. Tha Patriots have to operate within the bounds of the salary cap they need to manage the cap effectvily for the team to continue to win.

Welker is using the leverage he has to not sign his tender and to skip team activities. The Patriots used their leverage by applying the Tag to him.

This is business no real good guys or bad guys.

I can see Welker wanking to get a better deal than Garcon btw,

wanking?

Totally for Welker. He knows that he has a very narrow window to set up the rest of his life. He has maybe another three years of elite production if he stays healthy and then a couple of years of role player production. He strongly believes that he should be an elite player next year. So he wants to get paid as an elite player with some of the risk shifted off his shoulders to the Patriots (who have benefitted massively from getting extremely high performance over contract value since 2007 from Welker).

Good luck to him, and as far as skipping mini-camp, he is not under contract, and his (limited) leverage is withholding his services from a team that is not offerning him a contract that he is willing to sign, so I am all for him using his leverage.

I'd love to see Welker on this team for the rest of his career. He has been a great servant but I respect our FO/Belichick too much to take sides on the issue. I'll understand completely if he gets traded. I can understand Welker's point of view too because he wants to get paid and having experienced that knee injury he doens't want to be stuck without a contract if it happens to him again.
