Are the Patriots *hoping* to keep Hoyer/trade him in pre-season?

No. I mean do they hope that he will actually last through TC vs. shining in the preseason and getting a trade offer for him.

Between the reports of others, and what I've seen for myself, Mallett's not ready to be a QB2 in the NFL, IMO. That being the case, I don't see any way that Hoyer is traded away.

Were the Pats contemplating moving Hoyer you'd think that Mallett would be getting lots more reps in camp to develop and to evaluate. He isn't. It's a real problem being 3rd on the depth chart and getting the opportunity to learn & develop.

Speaking of which I went to Smithfield several times in 2001 and saw Brady get LOTS of reps. Hmmmmm. At the very least BB in 2001 camp was seriously evaluating dropping the vet backup and going with TFB as #2.

Brady goes down with an injury and is out for the season in week 1.

With Hoyer at QB: Hoyer proves himself to be a worthy NFL QB, with an easy schedule and a talented offense, the Pats go 12-4 and are the #2 seed.

With Mallett at Qb: Pats offense implodes, go 8-8, miss playoffs.

Hoyer is valuable and we need him IMO, can't trade him away since Mallett clearly isn't ready.

All depends on the offer IMO ... what round pick is worth the risk of trading him and handing the job to Mallett. Patriots would not be doing their job if the door wasn't open. So would the Patriots say yes to a #2? I don't think they would do it for a #3.

to me that question is more intriguing than the Hoyer question. Hoyer's good as gone next year so if you trade Mallett and lose Hoyer we're in tough shape unless we get a vet here to backup Brady.

The Patriots would be surprised by ANY trade offer for Hoyer or Mallet.

Those reports that other teams want Hoyer are brought to you buy "reporters" that are not at Patriot practice.

Maybe, maybe, guys like Schefter have an inside source. Maybe.

Maybe they forgot to ask "why are the Patriots trying to drum up interest?" because they almost never get anything out of Foxboro.

If Brady goes down for the season in Week 1, I don't really care who the backup is. It won't matter.

If Brady goes down mid-season for a couple games, I want the backup who has the best chance to pull out wins in those games. Could mean the difference in first round bye or not. I suppose that Hoyer is that guy. If they trade him, then apparently they disagree.

I would conjecture they're hoping Mallett gets it together AND they get a great offer for Hoyer, thus freeing a roster spot and also getting better value than the eventual comp pick. But I doubt they're in a rush.

This is a team that used a 3rd -- more than once, actually -- for the privilege of training somebody to eventually be a backup QB.

I can't see either of those things happening - for that price a team would be expecting them to start - and they're not starting for another team this year.

In the unlikely event that offer did come down I'm sure they'd make it - gambling that Brady won't be injured if its Hoyer.

But since every team needs to be planning to play someone currently under contract at QB, that's not going to happen barring an injury.

I agree with others that Mallett is not yet ready. That being said, we have a complicated offense and Mallett may not be so far behind on another team with a simpler QB scheme.
