Earl Thomas, dashon goldson (when healthy), reggie nelson, reshad jones, jairus byrd and eric weddle are better than him.

" McCourty is currently the best free safety in the league." This is trollING.

He is the best coverage safety in the NFL and he is in the conversation with Weddle and Thomas as the best overall safety.

McCourty has as many pass defends than Nelson, Byrd and Jones combined.

Reggie Nelson - Reggie Nelson Stats - Cincinnati Bengals - ESPN
Jairus Byrd - Jairus Byrd Stats - Buffalo Bills - ESPN
Reshad Jones - http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/13395/reshad-jones

Weddle and Thomas are in the conversation for #1 but personally I give the nod to McCourty because he can cover the other teams #1 receiver if need be which I would be willing to bet neither of them could do.

I would point out to you that since McCourty entered the NFL in 2010 only Richard Sherman has more interceptions than McCourty’s 15. He has also forced 7 fumbles in that time period, so in 55 career games McCourty has forced 22 turnovers which is the most in the NFL since the start of 2010.

I think you’re drastically undervaluing Devin McCourty, he is a top 20 defensive player in the NFL in my opinion.

DMC is also the most targeted safety in the league. That's why his stats are inflated like that.

"he is a top 20 defensive player in the NFL in my opinion." REALLY?!?! He doesn't pop off the screen like a top 20 defensive player.

This season, I wouldn't say he is targeted a lot. QB's want to avoid him, and they are. DMC is a very good safety and climbing the ranks quickly. I don't understand all his hate either, he is a very underrated defender, like ninkovich.

Prove to me that is the case or stop posting baseless stuff trying to make an argument.

Your skill in assessing football players is not a strength for you

100% wrong.

"he is a top 20 defensive player in the NFL in my opinion." REALLY?!?! He doesn't pop off the screen like a top 20 defensive player.

Not even sure what that means.

I actually like to see some big hits, the commissioner doesn’t and it also increase the chance of injury so that is why in this NFL I prefer the type of safety McCourty is over someone like Polamalu. That’s my only point here, nothing more.

But there is absolutely nothing wrong with those hits.

Huh? How does one "target" a safety in a cover-2 heavy team? The answer is you don't and it doesn't happen. You're just making things up now.

One doesn't target the safeties in a cover-2. To beat a cover-2 zone, the offenses will generally spread and flood, go vertical on the flats to open lanes, and exploit a natural hole in the coverage that exists 20-25 yards off the LOS (hmmm, ring a bell?). In cover-2 man under the offenses will run reads in the seams with the TE (hmmm, seem to happen a lot?) to get favorable matchups, get the backs on the linebackers, and run mesh concepts with the receivers underneath to beat the man. One of the biggest advantages of the cover-2 is that it enables your safeties to defend the hash to sideline and bracket down coverage to prevent deep balls. I watch the all-22 after every game and McCourty is one of the best cover-2 safeties in the league. His pick and most passes defensed have come out of heads up play in cover-2, by jumping down on a manned-up receiver. This is a fact, and goes directly against your initial statement that McCourty doesn't get over and aid the corners. The Patriots very rarely get beat deep this season, and when they do it is when they are in a cover-1 derivation which leaves your corners on islands. Cover-1 type defenses rely on quick developing plays and the additional rusher getting there in time to either force a quick throw or get the sack. The corners press and rely on a quick play to prevent getting beat deep. If the receiver beats press, he is wide open for 6. Arrington has been getting beaten in press, and McCourty has actually gotten over so fast after seeing Arrington getting beat that QB's have pulled the ball down and gotten sacked (Ninkovich sack vs Pitt).

You posted two examples where you think McCourty didn't do his job, however it was very clear to anyone with even a cursory understanding of football that in those 'examples' he should have been nowhere near the football as it was not his responsibility in that defense. Believe it or not, offenses in the NFL actually understand how to read defenses and put their players into advantageous positions to exploit it.

Just posted this in the NFL Week 10 thread

I don't understand why patriot fans hate the giants so much. It's not their fault the patriots can't block their 4 man rush.

This is who we are dealing with.

Where did you come up with that? Do you have a link?

Who does jump off the screen? Did Vince Wilfork ever jump off a screen?

I can't find that statistic because they don't keep them for safetys like they do corners, but i saw it on nfl network when they were breaking down safetys.

Who does jump off the screen? dmc doesn't "break" games if that makes any sense? Chandler jones wrecks games and has to be accounted fore just like any elite defender. I don't think opposing teams fear dmc.

My problem with calling dmc an elite safety is his lack of killer instinct. Chandler jones in 1 and half seasons has shown that. Eugene wilson showed glimpses of that in his first 2 seasons when the team needed him in the playoffs.

Maybe i have high standards when it comes to elite players, but i want to see dmc "save" the team before i began to trust him.

Did Vince Wilfork ever jump off a screen?" Every once in a while vince would wreck a teams offense.

In today's NFL, QBs generally try to throw where the safeties aren't. With McCourty's speed and understanding of the game, that is a hard thing to do. When you consider McCourty's league leading 15 turnovers since 2010 and his excellent tackling, it is truly bizarre that he doesn't "jump off the screen" for you. Then again, the nature of the examples you provided implies a very superficial understanding of what is actually happening on the field. The most likely scenario is that you're just a troll.

I'm not a troll, but i don't let my love for a team cause me to become bias to their players.

That's the reason why i NEVER bought into the asante (drop pick) samuel hype when he played here.

Chandler jones is different because he's a freak.
