OK, I agree that the first round is the place to get top corners and top DE's, and perhaps even DT'sIt's not a position with as many 1st round draft choices.
Last year, 5 CBs went in the first. 0 DTs/NTs.
2020: 6 CBs, 2 DTs (Derrick Brown, Rod Kinlaw).
Then you look at the top CBs in the NFL (according to PFF):
JC is an anomaly. All the others are 1st round picks.
- Jalen Ramsey, Los Angeles Rams. ...
- Jaire Alexander, Green Bay Packers. ...
- Tre'Davious White, Buffalo Bills. ...
- Trevon Diggs, Dallas Cowboys. ...
- Marlon Humphrey, Baltimore Ravens. ...
- Marshon Lattimore, New Orleans Saints. ...
- Xavien Howard, Miami Dolphins. ...
- Stephon Gilmore, Carolina Panthers.
- Denzel Ward
- JC Jackson
Then I look at what are considered the top DT/NTs and you have players like Chris Jones, Calais Campbell, Grady Jarrett, DJ Reader who are in the top but aren't 1st rounders:
It really seems like you need to spend a 1st if you want an All-Pro CB but the opposite is not true.
Unless both Jackson and McCourty are extended, by FAR the biggest need is at CB.
Also, let us say that we absolutely bring in a CB and a DT. One is our first rounder, one is a top-level free agent and one is a 2nd rounder, I think that signed a corner in the first, and a DT or CB in the second, and a DT or CB in free agency is more cost=effective than other options.
