As we head into the preseason, this conversation tends to come up, and I really want to get this out there:

I've gotten hit with multiple copyright complaints this offseason regarding posting links on the forum to illegal streaming sites (or mentioning them). Most of them were found on past threads, but it was a bit of a battle dealing with it each time it happened, and I really wanted to make this clear moving forward:

You absolutely cannot do it, and I'm as serious as I'm ever going to be about this. The approach they're taking is essentially saying we're facilitating illegal activity by linking to it (which, in their mind, is essentially promoting it), and I don't have the wherewithal to deal with this if it does get pushed beyond what I've already had to deal with. Both the NBA and the NFL are pushing this issue, and they're going so far as to pull down pages that are indexed in Google and even contacting hosting providers for multiple offenders (which takes the site down), along with sending letters to site owners.

It's really simple: you cannot share a link to it (or mention the site) on the forum. If you do, the first time you'll get a warning. The second time, I'm going to have to suspend your account for 30 days, and the third time, it's permanent. Not trying to be difficult, but I don't have the resources to deal with any legal issues, and while you might argue or disagree with their logic behind it (and I also don't agree with it), it doesn't change the fact that it falls on me, and I'm just a nobody with a website. I don't have money or the time to fly wherever I would need to go and appear in court if that's what it came down to, let alone any potential fines.

And again, we can go round and round on whether or not they have a case, but the bottom line is, it's just a conversation I don't want to have at all. They can tie up my time/money arguing it, and I can't afford to do that.

It sucks, and I'm not trying to be a jerk, but this current climate is challenging enough as it is. This is one issue that I absolutely don't want to have to deal with again, having been down this road already this offseason. And I certainly don't want to get a letter from their legal team for being a "multiple-time offender" and then really have it escalate. So please help me out and don't do it.

EDITED 8/8 3:23 pm: Added the mention of the sites, which is also an issue.

I dunno, bud. I think a cease and desist notice on NFL letterhead would look cool AF over the bar.

LOL, you laugh, but to this day my wife and I still cringe when we see a FedEx truck on our street and cross our fingers it doesn't stop at our house. That's how they used to come.

can't isn't in my spellcheck, so eh...
Listen, 'a full commitment's what I'm thinkin' of' with this, and 'We've known each other for so long' so I 'just Gotta make you understand' what I'm saying here.

I would go further: 30 day ban for the first offense and a perm ban for the 2nd.
There will be people who won't be aware of it or missed the thread. But it's one of those things where if they did it and then I message them about it and then they did it again, then it's definitely kind of an issue.

Maybe this should be stickied (I think we can take down the coaching interviews/hiring thread now)?
I will. Leaving it unlocked within the main threads for now so people see it and then I'll bump it to the top and sticky it.

I share because I care... and I am a rebel... I dare the NFL to come after me...

What constitutes an “illegal streaming site”?

What constitutes an “illegal streaming site”?
Any site that provides the game that isn't sanctioned or licensed by the league(s) to do so.

Any site that provides the game that isn't sanctioned or licensed by the league(s) to do so.
Another way of putting it: if you can't find it listed on Patriots.com or a reputable news source (e.g., boston.com), don't post it.

Any site that provides the game that isn't sanctioned or licensed by the league(s) to do so.
People are posting that here? Or do you mean they are naming the sites, or providing links?

EDIT: never mind I reread, and it make more sense now. Posting the link to the illegal site.

Somewhat related. It's odd that the NFL allows me to livestream games on Xfinity from the app or a browser but not while it's going live. If I ever want to watch the game on the projector outside I can't just bring my laptop and go to Xfinity.com and stream it, I have to run a long ass HDMI cable from my cable box to the projector instead. I don't really get it

Mentioning them is also an issue. They're scanning the internet and any sites with pages that have either the link or the mention are getting pinged.

Section 230 is a law in the United States that provides legal protection to online platforms, allowing them to avoid liability for content posted by users. That said, I understand Ian's reluctance to incur the cost and hassle of dealing with this. If you want to post un-licensed sites, do it on Twitter and let Elon deal with it.
