A Draft Exercise With A Difference (2014)

and I don't think Clowney is particularly well suited to be a 3-4 OLB. He's best with his hand down rushing. But that's JMHO.

Great job.

Clowney could probably play QB and safety. Guys an absolute beast. Easily the best player in this draft.

Finally found the time to get back to this.

QB Zach Mettenberger round 4 pick 1
RB Storm Jackson round 7 pick 1

RT Wesley Johnson round 6, pick 2
RG Spencer Long round 7, pick 3
C Marcus Martin round 6, pick 3
LG Brandon Thomas round 4, pick 3
LT Jake Matthews Round 1 Pick 2

TE Colt Lyerla UDFA
TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins round 2 Pick 2
WR Jarvis Landry Round 2 Pick 3
WR Brandon Coleman Round 5, pick 1
WR Michael Campanaro Round 5, pick 2

DT RaShede Hageman Round 1 Pick 3
DT Ego Ferguson Round 3 Pick 3
DE Jadeveon Clowney Round 1 Pick 1
DE Trent Murphy Round 2 Pick 3

OLB Kyle Van Noy Round 2 Pick 1
MLB Carl Bradford FA
OLB Carl Bradford round 3 pick 1

CB Ross C-o-c-krell round 4 pick 2
CB Aaron Colvin round 6 pick 1
SS Vinnie Sunseri round 5, pick 3
FS Jonathan Dowling round 7 pick 2

I'm very impressed that Carl Bradford can play both MLB and OLB at the same time. That makes him worth more than a 3rd round pick in my book.

I assume Max Bullough was the UDFA you had in mind for MLB.

1. Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn (NFL DraftScout #4). The best prospect in this draft, IMO, and the best OT prospect since Joe Thomas.

1. Timmy Jernigan, DT, Florida St. (#23). 6'2" 298#. Strong against the run but able to penetrate. A close call with Ra'Shede Hageman, but Jernigan is more consistent.

I fought over these two with Matthews and Hageman but went the other way. Really both would be nice. We had a lot of common picks which was nice.

(3) CB- Stanley Jean-Baptiste- 6’3” 215lbs (86)
(7) CB- Aaron Colvin- 6’0” 186lbs (222)
(UDFA) FS- Jonathan Dowling- 6’2” 198lbs (284)
(5) SS-Vinnie Sunseri- 6’0” 210lbs (166)

I had 3 of the 4 you had and came close on Baptiste.

Robinson vs. Matthews is no contest as far as I'm concerned. Matthews is a fine player who will step in and start day 1, but I think Robinson is an exceptional talent, every bit as freakish as Clowney.

Jernigan vs. Hageman is one that I suspect I'll be debating right up until the draft.

I think Robinson may be the better pass protector and have better feet like a Walter Jones but the thing that impressed me about Matthews is they were interviewing a bunch of players on who's the best guy you played against. Many of the defenders said Mathews because he was just so physical and tenacious that we wore you out. I just love to hear that about a player. I don't the margin is what you do so I went with the guy with the physical label.

a couple of points to keep in mind when debating the two players:

Jerrigan plays on skates and Hageman knows how to anchor.

Jerrigan has had excellent pro style coaching and Hageman, not so much.

Jerrigan had an excellent supporting cast. Hageman, not so much.

Jernigan most certainly does not play on skates. I wouldn't be debating the choice if I thought he did.

That's absurd.

Clowney is by far at his best with his hand in the dirt moving forward. There's no evidence that he has processing capability to make good pre-snap reads to be an effective LB. Does he have the athletic ability? Sure. Does that mean he would be successful at it, or that it would be a good use of his talents? Not clear.

So "not clear" is the same as absurd? Clowney can stand up no problem. I doubt there's an edge player in the NFL of the same size as athletic as him. Go watch his game against Tennessee and Antonio Richardson and then tell me the notion of Clowney standing up is absurd. Clowney was almost literally running rings around him.

No, the part about Clowney being able to play safety or QB was what I found "absurd". I get that he's an athletic freak, and I got your man-love for him. But he's not Captain America. I'm sure he could stand up, and I never suggested that that part was "absurd" - only that his skill set is better suited to being a DE rushing with his hand down.

I think that's the point. This draft is so darn deep, and so strong on all 3 days. There are too many good prospects, and you have to make some choices about your priorities and which way you want to go. Tough. You made some clear choices, and had a nice draft.

Lots of guys are showing up multiple times on different people's mocks, FWIW:

- Stanley Jean-Baptiste. Big, physical press-man CB. "Seattle style".
- Christian Jones. An ILB who can play all 3 positions, who can pass rush, drop into coverage, and was stout enough against the run that he was played at DT at times.
- Richard Rodgers. A TE who played slot receiver at 245# this season, and who has similar capability to Jace Amaro.

Among others. A lot of the guys in your draft, or in Wilfork's, or in Everlong's, who weren't in mind were guys who I struggled with possibly including.

There are going to be a lot of ways to slice this draft and come up with a really good set of prospects. I think the key will be for teams to be clear about their plans and about what kind of prospects they want. Clarity is power (old Tony Robbins saying). That's what allowed Seattle to get good so fast. Teams without a clear vision and understanding of what kind of players fit that vision bumble around and waste precious opportunities (and the Pats have done some of that, especially on defense).

Nice catch. No it was actually Steele Divitto who I think will run better than expected at the combine. He plays faster than his 40 says but if he runs a 4.8-something then I would change it post combine. I was also looking at Greg Blair from Cincy.

Bullough was suspended and then showed up for the EWSG overweight.
