Kraft lawyer drafted casino rule changes in Foxborough - The Boston Globe

A lawyer for the Kraft Group drafted zoning changes for the town of Foxborough this summer that would have allowed construction of casinos on property the company owns across from Gillette Stadium, raising the prospect that one of the state’s most powerful families could have a role in the Commonwealth’s plans for expanded gambling.

The Kraft Group said the changes were submitted at the town manager’s request. The manager, Kevin Paicos, also said he asked the Kraft lawyer to draft the proposal and that he brought the issue to selectmen at the request of several developers, whom he declined to name.

Town planner Sharon Wason said that even if the Krafts did not directly request the zoning change to allow gambling, they did not object to it. She said the family owns about 500 acres along Route 1 in Foxborough, giving them a number of options.

I would have to think the NFL would frown heavily on seeing one of it's high profile owners getting involved in gambling. Look at the microscope of guys just going to Vegas or ARod playing in high stakes poker.

I agree, but if anything like this does happen in the future, Kraft isn't going to be invovled in gambling. Insead, he will simply lease his land to other deveopers, to be used for gambling.
Trust me on this, a town does not ask a private attorney, who represents a large, wealthy and powerful landowner in town, to draft possible zoning changes, unless there is something afoot. Maybe it passes and becomes law, maybe it doesn't, but its significant nevertheless.

How would casino(s) affect parking and traffic on game day?
Gillette parking and exit traffic is already awful.

I thought NFL owners must be divested from any form of gambling operations...ie....the Rooney family.

2008:
"The Rooney family is working to restructure the ownership of the Steelers to comply with National Football League guidelines that prohibit association with racetrack and gambling interests, a process that is forcing several brothers of team chairman Dan Rooney to seek to sell their shares in the franchise, according to a source familiar with the situation"

Great question. Accurate observation.
And, my guess is both will be totally ignored by the Krafts so long as they get their casino-driven rent money.

I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of it, or what went on with the Steelers, but if the Krafts own the land, and simply rent it out to a developer who then puts a casino on it, the Krafts are simply landlords and have no ownership interest, direct or indirect, with the gambling operation.

by the way, PatsWickedPissah, I have read your tag line I dont know how many times and it never really clicked, until I just read it again, and ... light finally dawned over marblehead, as they say...VERY VERY FUNNY

If anything I think it would be an improvement. I'll bet there will be plenty of enticements for fans to use the gambling facilities, including cheap parking.

Makes me wonder about some of those rumors about Patriot Place.. Very interesting..

It does seem like a casino would be a fitting 'puzzle piece' to Patriot place. I'd imagine that the existing infrastructure would make it quite the attractive site. How Foxboro would feel about that, on the other hand, I'm not so sure.

and Las Vegas can't have an NFL franchise???

weirdest story ever....NFL owner puts casino next to NFL stadium...offers sports book betting on NFL games...like THIS is ever going to happen in our lifetimes.

at the very least,I would expect an outside interest not connected to Bob Kraft in any way, to be the de facto owner /operator. How this could come to reality with the Kraft group as principal is beyond understanding

You should be able to bet on sports while at the game.

Oh, and they should bring an NFL team here to Las Vegas!
