I don't D; I suppose you could say Gregory shouldn't be listed over A. Wilson, or Justin Francis being listed as Wilfork's backup, I'm not trying to sound like a know it all brother, I'm just saying I'm not high on Daniel Fells. Lets not make it more than it has to be, you know I have nothing but respect and admiration for you as a poster.

I'm not trying to get into your thing about Fells. He'll sink or swim on his own. I just wasn't remembering the Carpenter situation the way you were, and I wanted to see what you were basing it on. Now that I see what you had for your foundation, I think you're overselling that, but that's a minor issue for you and mgteich to go back and forth about (perhaps) while I head back off to the sidelines.

Fells at his best is a JAG, in 2011 Gronk had more yards and twice as many touchdowns than Fells has had in his entire NFL.

He is not a good tight end, 3rd or 4th string at best.

So is Hooman, who is younger and probably has more long term potential. Fells is almost 30, so if you want to keep Gronkowski on the active 53 you're either keeping 5 tight ends or cutting a significantly young Ballard, Sudfeld, or Hooman for an average at best Fells.

Just a couple of thoughts regarding Fells...

He's a much, much better blocker than I think you're giving him credit for. He had a very lousy season due to missing the majority of camp due to an injury last year that he supposedly never shook, and yet at the end of the season he was blowing Hooman out of the water blocking based on the "experts" opinions around here.

I think that Fells is the obvious current TE1 in Gronk's absence due to not only being an all around better and more experienced TE/blocker than Ballard, but also having a very good grasp on our system.

I know that some people are very high on Ballard and I think he was a fine pickup--actually a very smart pickup, but I would not put him on the same par as Daniel Fells' overall skillset, particularly in our scheme; at least not yet. That could obviously change as the year progresses.

I also think that you're really overvaluing Hooman personally, but that's nothing more than a difference of opinions. Hooman was worth tendering and keeping around for sure, but he also saw the majority of his work due to the injuries last year to all of Gronk, Hernandez, and Fells--with nothing much left to replace them. He is definitely the most expendable one if they choose to make a roster cut at the position in my opinion. Gronk, Fells, Ballard, and Sudfeld are locks to this point. Hooman is not.

Just my thoughts.

Believe it or not, Gregory has been getting just as much if not more starting reps than Adrian Wilson--so it's probably 50/50 as to who starts opposite DMcC at this point (at least on the depth chart).

As we all know, they'll be swapped on depending on the circumstances.

Either way, it doesn't seem like Gregory was ever much of a threat to go anywhere--much to the dismay of those who said he'd be gone for sure for the past 6-7 months. The common sense approach was to keep him for another year, both contractually and depth wise, or lack thereof behind him.

Absolutely. It certainly makes sense.

I think in the end, it probably doesn't matter too much to a guy like Belichick as they'll all get valuable reps; but even with the upside that they both obviously have, I'd have to think that both Sudfeld and Ballard are also lacking the comfort of the system to this point.

Like I said, that could very well change as the season progresses. It's only natural to have differing opinions on certain players anyway, and to be honest I truly didn't know what to expect from Fells--aside from the fact that he should definitely show improvement from last year. IMO, Boyce will be on the game day roster. He adds a speed dimension that is unmatched. Patriots will probably try to get the ball to him a couple times a game, just to see if he can bring one to the house.

I absolutely agree that Hoomanawanui is nothing more than a JAG. He served a purpose last season and was worth tendering in the meantime as depth, but he's not really needed anymore in my opinion.

I don't necessarily agree that Fells is necessarily a JAG, or Ballard for that matter. I think either one are truly capable of holding down the TE2 or TE3 spots just fine, and Fells is an excellent blocker who already has some knowledge of our system. Ballard of course is a young TE who was worth taking a chance on.

The TE depth chart of Gronk, Fells, Ballard, and Sudfeld may not be "great," but it's just as good if not better as most teams in my opinion.

if Suds turns out to be really good and gronk comes back...i can see the 2 TE and 2 WR sets coming back..but for now more 3WR sets
