3 needs, all filled, and the whining continues

Folks wanted our future QB, a WR and an OT. We did all three while making our 5th a 4th. For me, I couldn't have expected more, although my personal preference was a CB at 37 instead of a WR.

The QB is who we wanted and who the staff wanted. They will be given plenty of time to develop him. He is our QB for 2024-2026. We will evaluate him and make a decision whether to pick up his 5th year option, as we did with Jones, and the either extend or him or try again in the 2027 draft. The Jones choice at 15 didn't work out. The major failure was the poor coaching. With better coaching, we likely would still have drafted a QB this year, and Jones would have the bridge instead of Brissette. We took our turn at the golden ring. Only one of the QB's worked out.

The WR was one of a dozen WR's rated as having 2nd round value. The staff knows him well and will make sure that he doesn't fail. His ceiling is obviously TBD. But he is very unlikely to be a Shuster, a Parker or a Thornton.

The OT is a disappointment in that many of us wanted us to get a Guyton or Mims. We were OK with using 68 to move up to get one of the two, or perhaps even Morgan. Apparently, Wolf tried, but it takes two, so we settled for getting a WR and a developmental OT. He could be a future starter at almost any one of the line positions, or he could be a top backup, or he could be dud who doesn't work out after 2-3 years of trying. However, I am fine with waiting after the top 8 were gone. We took an OT rated lower than others. However, we also have higher rated WR than if we had drafted an OT in the 2nd and a WR in the 3rd.

BOTTOM LINE
Wolf did what he needed to do. And he has a chance at two more solid picks early in the 4th (instead of one).

Its not about filling needs! Mac Jones and Harry and Isaiah Wynn filled needs. Its about bringing in difference makers who can compete at the highest level.
I am fine with Drake Maye but Polk over Mcconkey no that is a reach. The PSU OL is just another JAG.
No more trade downs.
Make a trade like you said you would
Spend some of that 40 million in cap space.

If you wanted someone different or a different position and explain your reasoning. That’s fine. We can learn through others insight.

Regarding Maye and his horrendous footwork, I liken it to Scottie Scheffler’s footwork when he hits his driver though Scheffler doesn’t have a bevy of 300 pounders after him.
My question is why, after so many years of coaching, football camps, and all the exposure these big time college QBs have with throwing gurus and such…..why hasn’t he been able to fix it and why should we be confident this next wave of coaches will do any better?

I was in the Daniels or trade down and take Penix camp. I acknowledge Maye's upside but you have to recognize he has the lowest floor too. I didn't like drafting Mac Jones, for completely different reasons, but I leaned in and hoped I was wrong until it was obvious I wasn't. I'll do the same with Maye. I hope he's Josh Allen with a bit less running and more pocket awareness.

I like Polk more than the way the thread has read. I think he's got great upside. He sort of reminds me of a smaller version of Anquan Boldin but with more suddenness. Runs good routes, has great heads, goes up and secures the ball. Personally I wanted Mitchell from Texas and might have taken Polk later but I still like the pick a lot.

I don't like the Wallace pick. He doesn't fill the LT need and I don't think he can play RT either. Best hope is he can develop into a guard but he has 4 years and out of the league written all over him. Again hope I'm wrong.

Right, but the "value" that people are using to judge the draft is not factual, it's just a collated set of opinions formed by consensus.

People get sooooo butt-hurt because things don't go the way an opinion poll told them they were going to go.

People are so convinced they understand everything about the players based on those opinion polls but unlike the teams they've never had a 1:1 with the players, done deep dives with their coaches, have detailed knowledge of the team's current players in terms of performance, injuries, salary demands, etc.

Mock drafts are far from perfect, yet people treat them as if they are, and it's nonsense to me.

Hell, NFL front offices are far from perfect too, but they aren't picking from an opinion poll, they know they have to integrate a given player into their actual team and be able to make that work even when real-life players often have "complicated" personalities.

For many being able to vent based on stupid perceptions is a big part of being a sports fan, but for me, I give it a pass.

I would tend to agree with you normally.. but not in this case... for the past majority of seasons whenever we have a wtf moment with a draft pick as a fan it has stayed the same way.. Cole Strange, Thornton, chad ryland, Duke Dawson etc.

Whenever majority of fans wanted one and we did not draft them, it turned out that pick was good.. dawand jones, Pickens, pierce, tank dell etc..


For now our front office is squibbing big time and I am sure on average our resident experts with limited info have better hit rate than our front office.

Sorry. Not buying into the argument that fans know less.. the front office does not deserve the respect till it drafts a pro bowler and 1 or 2 contributors. For now we seem to be running like a headless chicken after round 1.

He has very good size. 6’5” 315 lbs- Athleticism- 5.1 40 at 315 lbs/ 34 inch arms/ damn near 11 inch hands/ Graded out as the 7th rated overall lineman athletically/ 1.7 10 yard split/ 10 inch broad jump; with fundamentals & technique than Fashanu. Obviously, he has some concerns (as do all prospects) but people are being overly dramatic as usual.

Slightly good forty and vertical with bad ability drills and okay arms is not a starter or the kind of athleticism you expect to start.

It is a great question. Maybe the attention has been elsewhere in the coaching up to now? Not the highest priority? It does seem like there's been plenty of time. Yet, the coaches who comment all seem to treat it as something to be addressed (coachable) rather than a fatal flaw.

Probably because they don’t think they have to yet. Aaron Rodgers had the Jed Tedford throwing motion which was highly criticized coming out of the draft. He changed it after he was drafted. Either Maye works on it or not.
