2027 Draft: Cornerback

IDK about the odds on Hampton specifically, but I've said all along that the best complement to Gonzo would be a more physical, aggressive CB2. Hampton certainly fits the part. So does Demello Jones. I think probably Brice Pollack as well.

The grades don't match the film (62.6 run defense, 64.8 coverage, 18.2 missed tackle rate), but the film is very intriguing. He's very loose hipped and I can see him run an excellent 3-cone and he's clearly fast too. Definitely worthy of a watch list.

A small detail I've noticed. I'm always intrigued by LSU DBs, LSU is DBu after all. The highest profile draftable CB at the school is PJ Woodland but, and this is the small detail I've noticed, is that he's listed as only 164lbs, despite being 5'11".

One thing I appreciate about NFL Draft Buzz is that they provide estimated forty times for almost all prospects. I wouldn't take them to the bank as predictors of combine times but until we get to the combine, it's useful to have some sort of guide to speed for certain positions and CB is definitely one of those positions. So here are the sub 4.40 corners according to NFL Draft Buzz and some times for notable prospects we like.

1. Gentry Williams, Georgia - 4.29
2. Kayin Lee, Tennessee - 4.30
2. Elliott Washington, Clemson - 4.30
4. Zabien Brown, Alabama - 4.34
5. Chris Peal, Syracuse - 4.35
6. Boo Carter, Colorado (fmrly Tennessee) - 4.37
7. Jamari Sharpe, Indiana - 4.38
7. Jyaire Hill, Michigan - 4.38
7. Eli Bowen, Oklahoma - 4.38
7. Jermaine Matthews, Ohio State - 4.38
7. Dezz Ricks, Texas A&M - 4.38

Other notables:

Ellis Robinson, Georgia - 4.48
Brice Pollock, Texas Tech - 4.44
Kelley Jones, Miss St - 4.42
Ashton Hampton, Clemson - 4.43
Zach Lutmer, Iowa - 4.44
AJ Harris, Indiana - 4.45
OJ Frederique, Miami - 4.42

Edit: Not from the same source so lacks consistency but Evan Johnson of BYU might be the fastest. He's reportedly run a 4.27 forty.

Sadly Demello Jones isn't listed on NFL Draft Buzz

If the above holds true, it's a fast bunch. Based upon this alone, stock up for Zabien Brown and Chris Peal. However, it should be noted that our draft pick at that position, Karon Prunty ran a 4.45 so the importance of speed is debatable.

Does Karon Prunty tell us anything about what the Pats are looking at at CB?

Maybe, maybe not but I decided to look for the most Karon Prunty-ish CBs in next years draft. I've used the following metrics.

Height - Prunty was 6'2" so I'm looking for corners at least 6' tall, preferably 6'1-6'2.
Speed - Less important, Prunty ran a 4.45
Grades - Prunty graded well with an 81.6 zone coverage grade and a 75.2 man coverage grade. i'll be looking for corners with a 70+ grade in both schemes.
Run defense - Nothing stands out with Prunty who had a fairly average run defense grade (70.9) and a fairly high missed tackle rate (15.7%). I prefer better run defenders but I won't include run defense in this exercise to be consistent.

Chris Peal, Syracuse

6'1". 4.35 forty. 87.8 zone coverage grade. 73.9 man coverage grade. He's also an excellent tackler.

Zach Lutmer, Iowa

6'1". 4.44 forty. 83.8 zone. 78.8 man. I have to include him because he fits the criteria but he's more a nickel/safety than an outside corner.

John Nestor, Minnesota

6'1". Speed unknown. 80.7 zone. 70.2 man

Evan Johnson, BYU

6'. Reported 4.27 forty! 74.7 zone. 79.2 man. Definitely add to your watch list.

Damari Brown, Miami

6'2". Speed is contentious. NFL draft Buzz listed him at 4.63 last year but EA College Sports gives him a 90 speed grade who who knows? 70.6 zone. 79 man.

And that's it! There were some that scored enough in both zone and man but they were sub 6'.

Why some notables missed out.

Ashton Hampton - 58.8 man coverage grade.
Kelley Jones/Zabien Brown - just missed on zone coverage grade but you can include them if you wish. It was close.
Demello Jones - Poor zone grade - 52.1.

Please note, this is not meant to be a definitive list of who we should draft, just those who, last season, compared most closely to Karon Prunty.

I think this is how I grade the outside corners currently.

Top 10

Leonard Moore, Notre Dame. Obviously.

1st round

Ellis Robinson, Georgia - Has Gonzo's fluidity.

Zabien Brown, Alabama - Hard to fault. Fast, good size, decent grades, gets his hands on the ball.

Round 1-2

Ashton Hampton, Clemson - Needs to improve in man coverage but ticks all other boxes and then some.

Round 2 (order tbd - These are potential first rounders with a strong 26/27.).

Kelley Jones, Mississippi State - Will rise once he proves last year wasn't just a flash in the pan.

OJ Frederique, Miami - Love the physicality and is good in man coverage. Poor zone grades suggest his game isn't nuanced yet due to lack of experience.

Brice Pollock, Texas Tech - Good size and zone coverage grades. Excellent run defense and gets his hands on the ball (5 INTs). Just needs to improve his man coverage grades (61.4).

Evan Johnson, BYU - great speed, good size, very good grades. Tackling (16.7% missed tackle rate) and age (5th year senior) are my only question marks.

Chris Peal, Syracuse - Ticks every box, he just needs to get his hands on the ball.

Day Two (I like aspects of their game but have yet to be convinced they can climb high up the board.

Demello Jones, Georgia - LOVE the physicality and run defense. Now we need to see the coverage in '26.

John Nestor, Minnesota - really like the size (6'2", 205) and the 6 INTs, 5 PBUs last year. But I got burned last year when I highlighted him only for him to give up 2 deep ball TDs to Ohio State in the very next game. Smaller school bully only?

Jamari Sharpe, Indiana - Man coverage grades were pretty poor last year. Everything is else was good/very good.

For now, those are the only corners I have any sort of feel for.
