I Looked at top ranked prospect Kenyon Sadiq.
I'm not going to waste time breaking down a player everyone should know. Top tier Athletic ability. Good Hands. Speed. Quickness. Intangibles. And also a pretty good run blocker for his size at 6'3 250lbs. Looking at his highlights he absolutely pops as a clear first round talent. To go into detail on his traits anymore would be wasting time. Let's talk about the elephant in the room. Production and inconsistency.
College Football is weird at times. You can dress 70-80 guys and offenses can very wildly. Not to mention ability level varies wildly among players more than the NFL, even for game day players who play significant snaps. It makes the whole thing a mess to look through at times and when you come across cases like Sadiq how do you tell when is what. Is it a problem with the player, or everything else limiting his production.
In the case of Sadiq, the lack of consistent production doesn't concern me much, if at all. I think any team passing on him due to lack of numbers and game to game consistently will come to regret that choice. The tape is too good and the range of traits too complete. The Ducks have 3 RBs running near or above 8YPA, that probably has something to due with limiting pass catching chances. When it comes to not being the main target in the passing game % wise like you'd expect to see... I watched a few game reels of him where he didn't produce much, and he never really had a chance. The routes weren't good and the plays looked designed to go to other guys already heading to the 2nd level while he stayed into block but was a drop off option that wasn't needed and so he didn't even have time to run a proper route. Also some of it was 'bad' play design. But that I mean his routes on those plays game him little chance to get open. If it became a scramble drill maybe he does something, but i don't think the OC was interested in his QB going through 4 reads to get back to the TE. I think he probably wanted to keep it simple for his QB. At least that is my guess.
I like PFF and analytics but I believe in the eye test above all. His run blocking is good enough to keep him on the field as a 3 down player. He will see a lot of snaps. And he has the skill set to take advantage when his name is called. Don't talk yourself out of a good thing by trying to figure out the reasons a great thing didn't always look great within a not great system. Sometimes, it is just the system's fault.
He is a great pick, he is going to be a really good and maybe great player. Trust what your eyes tell you. Sadiq is going to make pro bowls (Plural). Maybe not year 1. But he will. He is everything Fannin was last year who was a binkie of mine. But more, and more pro ready. Don't let the nature of the college game scare you off from what is plain to see. And that is Sadiq is a top 16 player.
