2026 Draft: Defensive Tackle

The more Kayden McDonald tape I watch, the more I'm convinced he's the safest pick in the entire draft.

I can't really see him becoming much more than what he is now, but what he is now is an elite run stuffer and a pocket disruptor. He's going under the radar because statistically he doesn't have much pass rush. But although he doesn't get to the QB very often, he creates chaos that allows teammates to get there. But if nothing else, a big run stuffing DT is vastly undervalued, and he has the ability to be elite at the NFL level in that respect.

He will contribute significantly from day one for whoever picks him, although he mightn't put up gaudy numbers. He is such a safe, NFL ready pick.
Is McDonald worth the 31st pick? Will he last to 63? I think No and No.

Who would be upset with Mesidor at 31 and McDonald at 63?

I've been away from this forum for less than a day only to come back to Clonamery and 1-if-by-sea turning every thread into something about sex.

I'm really surprised how high Peter Woods is on this chart, but Skyler Gil-Howard alert. If he's there on day 3, he could be great value.

Look at Skyler Gill-Howard's speed on the play below. Starts at 3:12 but link should take you straight there.

He's #0 who eventually makes the tackle.

If the Pats release Barmore, they will sign a FA, maybe in a different position, and be drafting one of these guys, Woods? Hunter? Halter?. Maybe two DTs with the second being a Tonga replacement like Benny from MI. Looks like lots of DT this year in the draft which will more likely fall, so release Barmore, sign an EDGE in FA, and draft to replace Barmore/Tonga.

Are people speculating about Barmore being released or traded with any evidence or is it being speculated about just because of the cap cost? Seems crazy to me to make the best unit on this team worse.

People are specualting because Mike Reiss wrote about Barmore, Diggs, and Onwenu not being value signings if the Pats want to be younger and cheaper (I don't remember the exact wording). Vrabel said "younger, cheaper, etc., and in the best interest of the team" which has to be a foreshadowing of changes coming.

Is the team worse by replacing Barmore and Tonga with Woods and Benny at DT and Phillips at EDGE? Same $$$s. Three for two. I know, I know that precludes Mesidor.

This is where my problem lies. The "etc" highlighted replaces 'better'. I don't think getting rid of Barmore makes us better...at all.

His difficulties with the law might be an issue though.

I am not advocating for releasing Barmore, only exploring. I don't see a FA DT that is younger and better. So maybe the Pats would sign Phillips, Mafe, or Oweh at EDGE with Barmore's money and draft a couple guys at DT to get younger and replace Barmore?

I think the court stuff with Barmore is way overblown. He was disciplined this year for a team rules violation and is a confirmed hot head. This does not seem major either.

I don't see better either. Maybe the medical condition scares them because it is unpredictable?

I get the sense from podcasts that Barmore would be a trade rather than cut candidate.

Barring something major coming out of these legal issues, there is no way I’m straight releasing Barmore. Now, a trade on the other hand is a different story. With the past clot issues, I’d be willing to listen on trade offers. It has to bring back value though.
