2024 NFL Draft Thread (Continued..)

I don’t disagree with the philosophy, but I think you underestimate the talent. A true #1 WR, for example, elevates everyone else, as does a good QB.

They’ve got a couple of obvious holes, sure, but the idea of a multi year rebuild ignores two facts: rookies usually need a couple of years, and control is 4 years, then you have to pay.

Like I said in the other post, I don’t think we are looking at a long term rebuild, I think the defense is already a top defense, and they have good special teamers that really need a good special teams coach, Cam Achord really sucked. The offense is what needs the work, and it just so happens that this draft has 3 highly rated QB’s, and is exceptionally strong at OT and WR. They can come away with a potential franchise QB, and really good quality prospects at WR and OT in the first two days of the Draft. They also have more $$$ to spend in free agency than 27 other teams, which gives them even more ability to upgrade at WR, OT, and even TE, while also adding a bridge year veteran QB, so the rookie can watch and learn.

They don’t need to make the playoffs next year, they just need to get better, and have their young players develop. And that gives them another free agency and Draft to “finish” putting the team together, although that’s a never ending pricess. What I want to see is them follow that path to become a long term contender, I don’t have any interest at all in bringing in Cousins, Wolson, or Fields etc…, so they can somehow try to win one, I want them to build a long term contender around a franchise QB, and whether it’s Williams, Maye, or Daniels doesn’t matter to me, only that they develop them into a premiere QB with a great team around them. And bringing in the next “ Calvin Johnson,” Randy Moss,” or “ Larry Fitzgerald” while passing on the QB makes absolutely no sense to me, as I have never seen a Championship team that was built around a WR. And as great as they were, and as long as they played, none of Calvin Johnson, Randy Moss, or Larry Fitzgerald ever won a ring, and they played well over 3 decades between them.

I've seen some interesting mock drafts where we trade down and end up with Bowers, a top OT and a 1st pick next year. If they go that route get a placeholder QB and build up the rest of the offense, a really good TE would go a long way to building up our offense for the future.

I fully expect we'll take a QB with the #3, but before you all jump ahead to taking a tackle with the 2nd rounder, consider that we might not want to pass up an opportunity to target a big fast talented WR if they're there.

Brian Thomas Jr., Troy Franklin, Adonai Mitchell: one of these guys might be available at #34. If so, you can't pass them up.

I would take one of Guyton, Morgan, Sumataia or even Paul over Xavier Worthy, Ladd McConkey, or Xavier Legette.

But Thomas, Franklin and Mitchell are beasts. We'll be talking about our OK but mediocre LT Guyton taken over game breakers like AJ Brown if we pass up the 3 WRs I mentioned.

Couldn’t disagree more on Guyton, he’s one of the best tackle prospects in this draft, my only concern s that he’s going to rise too high to have any shot at him. But I agree with what you are saying about not simply locking in on tackle; as the quality at WR is exceptional, so they will have to see who the best players are at those positions and then decide. And I really like either Thomas or Franklin at WR, probably even more than the higher rated WR’s.

Just jumping in on the QB discussion. I don't want old Kirk Cousins or a middle of the road QB like Justin Fields. I'm all for Maye or Daniels, whichever is available to us. Very few first round QBs are a guarantee but if you are scared to do it you'll never get a "special" franchise altering player.

Just freaking go for it. Bring in the right OC, draft Maye/Daniels, sign one of those middle of the road QBs strictly as a bridge if necessary and then build the OL and receiving group. If there was a veteran QB out there who I thought could help us contend for a championship in the future I'd be open to it. But as far as I can see there is not.

Winner

I have to log out before I start getting really snarky. But before I do how about they take Bowers at #3, draft a long snapper at 35, and then sign Johnny Manziel? It could work. Really, it could……

Sorry cmass, I just couldn’t help myself.

I was just using Guyton as an example of taking an unsexy pick while Franklin, Thomas and Mitchell are ripping up the league.

I'd want more in a trade than that. I'd want 2 1sts and 2 2nds. Next year's first, if that team does well, could end up with a 2nd round value player. And then it's a year away which drops it another round. I would have to have that team's 2nd rounder this year for a drop down, plus next year's #1, and a sweetener on top of that. Otherwise I'd have no interest. Consider what the Dolphins got for Waddle and what the 9ers gave up for Lance. That's my baseline.

There was more I just pointed out the two top picks, I think they had us with another second and another pick, just spitballing in any case, since it's offseason.

Just dreaming of the days when Gronk would take over a game, another TE like him would really help the rebuilding process.

I get it, and I don’t hate Harrison or Alt or any of the others, I just believe that you have to find a franchise QB, and a top 3 pick is one of your best shots at doing that.

For the most part I believe the first round is about finding all pro players, more than filling a specific need, but having the worst QB’s in football overrides that philosophy. And if I didn’t believe there was franchise potential at QB where they are picking then I would reluctantly take another player, but I really like all 3 QB prospects, in terms of their talent, so for me it’s no question, take the QB and then fix whatever else needs to be fixed. And, as I said earlier, I’m not interested in patching together QB in the hope of winning some year, I want them to build a long term contender, and since the defense is already there focus on fixing the offense this offseason, then see where they are at after the season, and go from there.

If that's the case what stops us from trying out next year . Jordan love came in 2020 batch and in his 4th season is looking like a stud.

We are not winning the superbowl in 2024 lest even a postseason appearance so why not get the best talent on other positions before we gamble on qb.

Draft MHJ or trade to 6 , get an OT and extra second round pick and use those second round picks and third rounder on a qb/OT and WR. Start this year with Mac/ brissett/ any other vet qb.
Start Brissett as a bridge QB for a second round pick on JJ McCarthy or Nix? No thanks.

We have the #3 pick. There is a good chance, with competence, that we can become a middling team again and will be selecting mid-first round. Go for the uber talented QB when you have a top 3 pick, not down the road.

I agree with that, I like the top 3 and we're guaranteed to get one if we stay put.
