I think Zappe was looking at Brown and thought Brown was going to cut towards the sideline but instead he drifted upfield at the same time Zappe threw it.
Yeah, I saw Zappe explaining to BOB right after and he made a hand motion to the right and then up, like he was saying "I thought he'd go this way but he went upfield instead"
