2022 PTP Draft Board / Pats Draft Talk

There were rumors that the Patriots tried to trade up in 2018 so they could draft Frank Ragnow.
Patriots tried to trade up for center Frank Ragnow, so maybe they’re not happy with their offensive line

Not sure if this was ever officially confirmed. But if true, it’s an example where they would be willing to take an interior lineman in the 1st who didn’t have experience at tackle.

And Bill was justified in trying to get Ragnow, as he is one of the best centers in the league.

i don't think they would do that for Linderbaum. From a Size/Arm length and therefore power standpoint it's just not enough imo to justify a top 20 pick. You won't see him bulling 0T. He will be good to maybe great in a zone blocking scheme with combos and in space but not so much with power. But what makes a IOL first rd. worthy imo is a combination of great power and athletic. Guys who absorb Bull rushes and get movement in the north south ground game.

Yep. Misinformation. You remember the Patriots doing that to the Jests regarding Vernon Gholston out of Ohio State?
The bowling ball with knives?

Even UDFA LB Gary Guyton had more sacks than Gholston.

Wasn't that Booger McFarland-The bowling ball of butcher knives?
Nah, I distinctly remember word out of the Jets came that Gholston was 'a bowling ball with knives'. It got thrown back in their faces every year till he was finally released.

We need to come out of this draft with another solid o-linemen IMO. Mac is the franchise and we need to protect him. Right now our RG is Ferentz. Yikes.
Where to you get that Ferentz is the RG? Most people are of the opinion that the trading of Mason and with Trent Brown re-signed that Onwenu is slotted at RG. It's something I believe as well.

As it stands right now, I'd say that Ferentz will be battling Desjarlais, Ambright, and Sherman for the LG spot. I think that there are several Guards in the draft that the Patriots have the potential to go with that would automatically be upgrades over those 4.

The chances Brown or Wynn misses playing time is north of 50/50 if past is prologue. So Onwenu kicks out to tackle and…Billy Sherman or Ferentz enters the game. Jeepers Creepers. That’s a recipe for disaster.

Or Onwenu does not kick out and Herron or Cajuste play right tackle. Both were OK at right tackle in 2021 if I remember correctly. Having said that, if Penning falls to 21 that solves a lot of problems, backup plan might be Z Johnson playing left guard drafted early in Round 2. It is tough to find a starter in Round 5 or later (but Onwenu did it from Round 6). Right now we have a hole at left guard, but there are a bunch of FAs still out there and Desjarlais might be OK (he was a left guard in the CFL) if we do not draft a starter.

Yeah, the challenge is that the injury history for both OT's leaves us all wanting a third starting caliber OT, which is largely unheard of in the NFL. But it is what it is.

Agreed. Great post. Maybe Penning drops - Mike Reiss' ESPN predictor says a 30% chance. I think the Pats go CB or Dax Hill first (hope not Booth) and then OLine or run stuffing DT second. If Penning is there at 21 I think he will be hard to pass on as Wynn is gone next year and is an injury guy this year like you note.

Belichick's 1st round picks:

2001 Richard Seymour (6)
2002 Daniel Graham (21)
2003 Ty Warren (13)
2004 Vince Wilfork (21)
2004 Ben Watson (32)
2005 Logan Mankins (21)
2006 Laurence Maroney (32)
2007 Brandon Meriweather (24)
2008 Jerod Mayo (10)
2010 Devin McCourty (27)
2011 Nate Solder (17)
2012 Chandler Jones (21)
2012 Donte Hightower (25)
2014 Dominique Easley (29)
2015 Malcolm Brown (32)
2018 Isaiah Wynn (23)
2018 Sony Michel (31)
2019 N'Keal Harry (32)
2021 Mac Jones (15)

I'd submit that this is the best record of an NFL exec in the last 20 years. To hit on so many 1st rounders is unprecedented. Especially if you remove all the players taken from picking in the last 4. When the Patriots pick in the meat of the draft, they rarely make mistakes.

I see only Brandon Meriweather and perhaps Isaiah Wynn (although the latter is more about injuries).

Compare this for instance to the Buffalo Bills who have been picking very high in the draft forever:

2000 Erik Flowers (26)
2001 Nate Clements (21)
2002 Mike Williams (4)
2003 Willis McGahee (23)
2004 Lee Evans (13)
2004 JP Losman (22)
2006 Donte Whitner (8)
2006 John McCargo (26)
2007 Marshawn Lynch (12)
2008 Leodis McKelvin (11)
2009 Aaron Maybin (11)
2009 Eric Wood (28)
2010 CJ Spiller (9)
2011 Marcell Dareus (3)
2012 Stephon Gilmore (10)
2013 EJ Manuel (16)
2014 Sammy Watkins (4) (traded up for two #1s)
2016 Shaq Lawson (19)
2017 Tre White (27)
2018 Josh Allen (7)
2018 Tremaine Edmunds (16)
2020 Ed Oliver (9)
2021 Greg Rousseau (30)

Until McDermott and company arrived, the Bills had one bust after another. They've hit on 4 of their last 4 prior to last year. Before that, they really only had Gilmore, Wood, Marshawn, Lee Evans and Nate Clements to show for 15 years of drafting.

Hitting in the first round of the draft would seem to make a huge difference in the success of the team, and no one has done it better than Belichick the last 2 decades.

Obviously, we slumped from 2014 on.

Solder was our 3rd OT in 2011.

I don't know if I would be happy with OL in the First Round over a Defensive Player... Defense wins Championships right?? Why is Yodny Cajuste still on this Team?? He's been useless for a while...drop that dead weight and get a real back-up swing Tackle not in the First Round.

Bacon: brought him up but I would really like Zion Johnson in the Second not opposed at all could be a Starter as a Rookie.

Zion will probably go early 2nd, some say late 1st. He probably will not last until #53. So we have to pick him at #21 (do not believe they will do that) or trade back to get Zion and an additional pick in the 3rd. I am guessing from on-line mock drafts, Bacon has his own grades.

I remember this! I was following Twitter which was way ahead of the TV broadcast with picks/trades etc. I can't recall which account it was (it was a legitimate and an accurate source though that much I remember - otherwise I wouldn't have thought twice) and I recall for 5-10 mins a frenzy of tweets that sources were saying Pats we're extremely active the past 20 mins looking to move above 20 for Ragnow.

Then it clicked..this was Patricia's first year as HC there. They must have shared some insight on the player while together.

Went on to be a pro bowler.

I say that to say this...I love Andrews. He is a folk hero around here. If Linderbaum is there ...would he be too much value to overlook? They were reportedly trying hard for Ragnow 4 years ago....

Just a thought...
