2022 PTP Draft Board / Pats Draft Talk

I just perused the testing results at NFL.com's Combine site for the WRs. While many of them have outstanding straight-line speed as a group their 3-cone results suck. And you guys know how important that drill is to BB. Nelson Aghalor had a 6.83s, Kendrick Bourne had 6.73, Jackobi Myers had a 7.07 and he was undrafted!. Additionally, Julian Edelman ran a 6.62 (!) and Deion Branch ran a 6.71.

Out of all the wrs who ran at the combine I only saw two who ran at the combine had a sub 7 second 3-cone: Kevin Austin, Notre Dame with a 6.71, and Bo Melton, Rutgers with a 6.98. Of course not all the wrs at the combine ran the 3-cone but as a group that's pretty underwhelming for short are quickness.

*all numbers for current or former Pats are from Wikipedia. Numbers for draft prospects are from NFL.com's combine results page.

Austin wasn't real productive at ND but he did have a great YPC... Big kid and damn athletic, but I still wouldn't spend more than a late 6th on him... We've been burned by his type in the past...

Rutgers WRs still have stank on them from the last one we had in the building... UDFA Only.

5 or 6 quality contributors is very unlikely. Not sure why we NEED that many. Mac's Y2 is a step forward and hopefully we win a playoff game, but a Super Bowl appearance is the goal in 2024, after 2 drafts and a new FA class with our cap space in 2023. We do not need 5 or 6 contributors this year, 3 is more realistic, but 5 or 6 would be nice.

I agree about Bledsoe coming off NFI. McGrone came off NFI too - you appeared to miss him.
McCrone was never promoted to the 53 man roster like Bledsoe was. The coaches actually cleared a roster spot for Bledsoe, you would think, in hopes he might be able to contribute down the stretch. Of course, he got hurt again and went on the IR.

Unless there’s a defensive scheme change, I really don’t see a role for McGrone to be a big contributor on defense. He’s too small to play ILB in their 2 gap scheme. I see him more of a role player or STer. There’s nothing wrong with that for a 5th rounder.

I just thought whoever they wanted they wouldn’t screw around and would snatch their guy up with their first pick.

It's gonna be interesting where the top QBs shake out... Yeah maybe the Donkeys regret not taking Mac and this year will over-draft one of these guys to make up for that...

Reminder what to look for ...

OT - 29 or better vert, sub 4.75 shuttle, bj better than 8.6 and sub 7.85 3C. Historically we like bigger tackles and this is the only OL we take with a top 100 pick. Even Thuney played T in college that's the key to getting an early call.

G/C - sub 7.71 3C, sub 5.30 40, 4.7 shuttle. Quickness!

TE - 4.7 40, 34 + very, 7.05 3C. , sub 4.30 shuttle

WR - 4.4, sub 6.89 3C, 36 + vert has stood out. They like HWS guys like Jackson, Harry, Johnson, Givens a lot.

RB - 24 + bench, 9.1 bj, 35 vert, toughness is key. Tough, pass pro and don't fumble.

QB - accuracy and smarts (football & school.

CB - 10.5 + bj, 38 + vert is key, 4.4 49

Saf - 36 + vert and 10 + bj

LB - size & weight (245-255+), physicality, hands, a little crazy, a little smart, 4.7 40, 33 + arms

DT/UT - 29 + vert, 33 + arms

End/OLB - 6'3" height, 34 +, 10 bj
I will have new, different looking board by Monday. Some will be off and others added. Anyone want to chime in feel free.

Ah, broad jump. Had me going there for a while.

Agreed. Maybe a smaller, faster ILB on 3rd down when it is an obvious passing situation? Role player, but that 3rd down passing role would be nice to fill. I am tired of seeing Hightower and Bentley lumbering after a RB or TE in a passing situation.

Leo Chenal is big enough to be considered foreplay to BB, but he is far from lumbering.

That's OK; I'd Much rather have Travis Jones at the end of the 2nd round with multiple extra picks in hand from trade-downs than Jordan Davis at 21 and only 5 picks left for the rest of the weekend.
The combine performances aside, is there really a DT who put up the performances of Davis? There are articles out there arguing that he should have won the Heisman.

I would probably take Davis over any player in the draft for the Patriots. Need/performance etc. and I didn't think there was much chance he was going to be there for the Pats at 21 even before today, but this performance today kills all chances IMO. That being said, I have to disagree about the Heisman. Great dominating player without a doubt, but due to conditioning/rotation/scheme/whatever, he didn't play all that many snaps.

Devin Llloyd ran a 4.66. He has been compared to Devin White, whose speed at the combine was significantly higher at 4.42. It should not be a breaker though.

You like getting your ass kicked, don’t you? I said Lloyd’s 40 time shouldn’t be a deal breaker, and I even showed a comparison with Darius Leonard, who had similar measurables. But you’re too dumb to realize that, aren’t you creepy old man? Now go follow Tommy Boy to his next team…maybe he can join you on Planet Ass.
Ok dumbass. Now you're just stupid and a liar. You didn't mention 40 time. You said speed. GFY nancy boi.

LB

Physical Prototype Pats (Spikes, Hightower, Mayo)
Leo Chenal - is a little bull. Love watching him in his power stance mugged up right over the OL. Powerful, versatile, tough sob that represents the Wisky brand well. He's not just an "effort" prospect. Legit athlete that can move with almost anyone. Big hitter! Tone setter. Very smart, he's ID'g a play before the play is snapped. Plus run defender that can pressure the QB. He's PTP as it gets.

Darrian Beavers - similar prospect actually in many regards. Chanel is more explosive, just a better athlete. Beavers is ahead of him mentally on some areas but Chanel's upside is bigger. Beavers isn't the athlete but can handle OL'm & himself on the los with the best of 'em. Can handle himself in coverage in the HT / Bentley role. We really don't ask much there.

Brandon Smith - has the tools but the finish isn't there. Inconsistent in many aspects but has size we like, looks like an athlete with some length, physical has play making ability. Has a little potential as a 3 down backer but his processing, tackling ability & technique(s) are inconsistent. Lots of flashes but he's a project on day 3. Get stronger spend a year around other top tier backers in the film room & you could have something. 50/50 on whether to put him on the board.

Chad Muma - is a madman who plays the game the way fans love. I get Logan Wilson (got a 2nd from me) vibes maybe I'm off but I really like his physicality even though he needs to add a little more muscle to really hang up front. Like Wilson I like his ability to mirror the backfield & shut down outside runs. Functional in space can handle himself in the shallow cross MOF. Plus eyes that help ID before most plays start. Motor & effort are NFL caliber but needs to add on some muscle before hes full time tilt.

Christian Harris - former CB in HS with plus instincts in man coverage. Inconsistent in zone. Drops past his marks & really was a fish out of water for a while. Instincts are off. Above average all together with real potential. Plus athleticism for 240. Inconsistent taking on OL'm but truthfully Bama's DC Golding was a part of the problem as he works with the inside guys specifically. Harris has inconsistent tape but the good is really good & he's still got untapped potential. Seems very coachable. I'm sure Bill & Nick will talk over this year's crop.

Athleticism & Coverage

Quay Walker - very intriguing all-around prospect. Raw flashes proper instincts & smarts. Like Harris he'll have trouble dropping to his marks. Squeezing shallow crossers but has the makings there. Impressive athletic ability to keep up in man. Physical prospect that is inconsistent when taking on or rushing OL'm but again flashes big time. Inconsistent techniques all around. Bit of project but his tools are real & numerous.

Troy Anderson is one of the more interesting prospects in the LB class. Real potential in coverage imo. Experience at QB, RB, multiple LB spots. He's raw AF & is a project no doubt. Don't get it twisted but he's got real NFL speed / play speed. Real closing speed. Range & motor. I think he could help out in several areas & possibly be developed while starting & hopefully excelling on ST early on. Like Walker very raw but flashes recognition skills in coverage that come from experience. Obviously he's been studying & paying attention.

Other names to know ...
Damone Clark - rangy prospect that can mirror laterally & get vertically up field in a hurry. Athletic & physical but techniques are lacking taking in OL'm. Specifically hand placement & processing what block is coming. Understands where he's supposed to be in zone drops. He could handle what we ask here in terms of coverage. Size & speed are NFL prototype.

Devin Lloyd - is a great prospect but just struggle to see the fit at times. Maybe in the Collins role. Excellent range, closing speed, chase & pursuit, rushing the passer. Older prospect that isn't as physical as we'd like & is expected to go RD1. Love the prospect & wouldn't complain but making up the board. Trying to stay true in certain regards is tough. I'm 50/50 on him being on the board from past history.

Quite a few on this list really showed up at the combine. I’m sold on Chenal and want him in a Pats uniform. Lloyd was surprisingly not as athletic as I thought he would be, but then again, combine results should never override tape. Andersen and Muma were as advertised. Beavers looks solid. This is really going to be one of those drafts where I’m disappointed we don’t have more picks in the middle, I just know it. Would love for Bill and Co. to double dip here. Quite a few big, fast and athletic LB’s.
