He looks the part but he looked like a 1st overall pick two years ago and then disappeared. Red flag to me. He's a statue and his arm isn't live enough. Ceiling is average starter in my mind, but you could do worse.

Mike White is the mid-round guy I like a lot. Lauletta doesn't have an NFL arm.

Not exactly going out on a limb here with an odd commodity or late round pick, but I’d like to talk about Sam Hubbard.

Have seen him widely thought of as a late 1st, while others have seen him as vastly overrated and not worthy of such praise.

Very sound and disciplined holding the edge and handling the run game (See Ohio State vs. Penn State), and is capable of being an effective pass rusher. While he might not be an elite rusher, I think he’s a guy who could hold down one side of the DL for 7-10 years. Also think he’s someone who could contribute right away during these final years where Brady has a run at another Super Bowl.

Not so sure about taking him 31st overall because of some other factors at play, but should he slip, taking him at 43rd would be a solid pick.

Agree with your overall analysis and last paragraph. I don’t believe that he’s worthy of a first rounder, but something in the second (especially if there happens to be a trade down and we end up with 3 seconds and/or a couple of thirds) would be fine.

I think he’s a good kid with a high motor and a good work ethic, and that’s usually good for something. Whether or not it’s a first round pick is certainly up for debate. I’d like him as a mid-late second rounder, but someone will likely take a chance by then.

Better than Wilson? I'd be happy with that. Seriously.

Hey man! Stop trying to use my Nose Tackle draft pick for some scrub DE. :D

    Just kidding.

Absolutely. Not sure there’s such a thing as “safe” pick, but it feels like his trajectory bodes well as someone who can find a way to be on the field and contribute. The DE position (minus DEs in a 3-4) sort of reminds me of the NBA in terms of draft philosophy and shooting for potential. Teams value the athletic studs who they hope can get 10+ sacks a year, but while that might be their ceiling, they tend to be completely boom or bust types, and they don’t have other elements to their game they can fall back on.

Someone like Hubbard offers the possibility of being a gaudy pash rusher (though not as likely) as his ceiling, but his floor still includes a lot of good qualities that make for a well rounded DE. That’d make for a great 2nd rounder.

Eh I’m on board with this as well. I think we could all use a big ass to fill the middle!

Great 2nd rounder. Like I said, mid-late selection in the second would make me giddy, but I bet someone will scoop him up by 40 or so.

We may have a shot at 43, though. I’d be good with that pick. That said, I like the idea of trading our first for a 2nd + 3rd, but of course it takes two parties to make that happen.

The bad part of winning consistently :)rolleyes:) is that our draft pick is guaranteed to be low. I see names like Lamar Jackson, Tremaine Edmunds, Vita Vea, etc. They are probably long gone by the time #31 pick is on the clock.

I've seen a couple of media "draft guru" scouting reports that off-handedly mentioned Hubbard's solid run-D. It seems to me that BB would much rather have a guy who gets 5 or so sacks out of 30 pressures and is excellent at edge-contain and run-D than a guy who gets 12+ sacks out of 30 pressures but who's mediocre at edge-contain and run-D.

At 6053/270, if Hubbard's drill measureables are decent, it seems likely that he ends up as the Brandon Graham/Trent Murphy of this draft class - with some other team.

    Well, 6003/227. Safety-size LB.

    Now, if LB Tremaine Edmunds (6044/253) ran a 4.38/40 .... !!!

Update on the NT draft binkie:

Tim Settle didn't have the best of days at the combine. Curious of what the draftniks think about his film because from what I've seen and read he's a potentially solid NT. If so a poor combine performance could keep him in the Patriot's draft range.

Curious of why he didn't bench.
    upload_2018-3-4_18-23-34.png

On a side note: Vita Vea didn't run because of a hamstring issue but put up 41 reps on the bench. Pretty sure he's gone quick.

I expected a really good Combine from Settle. That was a surprising performance. You know who it reminded me of, by the numbers, although I think Settle is a better player?

    upload_2018-3-4_19-0-49.png

Vea did run the 40 at least. 5.10 is spectacular for a 350 pound man.

Also, not aimed at you, but rather the board in general: Why can't you guys just use the Draft Forum? We already have a binky thread, and we already have a Combine thread. It's like some people think this place only has a single subforum. ;)
