2014 Draft Prospect Thread

Any chance Nick Marshall declares for the draft? Maybe BB could do some interesting things with the kid in the 6th-7th round. 6'1, 210lb, crazy athlete, and he began as a CB at Georgia. Sounds like an interesting CB project to me.
I doubt it. Why would you leave a program where you're tearing it up to go be a 6th round draft pick.

AC Leonard, TE, Tennessee State

Watch the two consecutive plays I've linked. Interesting? That's a 245lb guy receiving that bomb.

Mizz. RB Henry Josey just declared, he's only 5'10 and 190 pounds but he is one of the most explosive RBs I've seen in a long time. He suffered an almost career-ending knee injury in 2012 but bounced back to rush for 1,100 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2013 and even earning Cotton Bowl MVP. He is one of many possible available RBs in 2014 that I'd love BB to take a chance on, especially with Ridley in his final year of his rookie deal. He's personally one of my favorite prospects for 2014.

Athletically I think he would be a perfect guy to take a chance on late as a flex TE. Unfortunately his off the field issues and character concerns will likely take him off the board completely, especially for the Pats. Was highly recruited to Florida by Urban Meyer. Was arrested for domestic battery in what sounds like a pretty ugly incident with his girlfriend and left the team in 2012 in what was described as a 'mutual decision'.

His girlfriend told police Leonard shoved her to the ground and dragged her through an apartment by her hair and feet. The police report said the woman was missing “chunks of hair” from her head.

I think we pass on this one.

If we do end up getting rid of Kelly this season because of the Cap. I wand Aaron Donald across from Wilfork.

People with a keener eye than me can probably give better insight but the tape and production don't lie. The guy looks like the next coming of Geno Atkins to me, he is so quick off the ball.

Can anyone else here shed some light on why he is considered only a 2nd rounder? is it just the size thing? Because the guy looks like a beast and looks like instant middle pass rush.

Another TE option is now available with Xavier Grimble from USC decalring for the draft. I know some will say BB doesn't draft USC players but Grimble looks like he could be a solid #2 TE in the NFL. He's a big, athletic target that should be available in the middle rounds and I think would be a solid option.

There really seems to be a ton of underclassman declaring for this years draft, making it extremely strong and deep. Unfortunately a lot of the deep positions aren't area's of our greatest need (OT, WR). It will be interesting to see how BB approaches things, with this year looking so strong, 2015 could be quite weak with a real lack of Senior talent. A trade down might be a decent option with the amount of depth available, and if things do look weaker next year it might not be the worst idea to trade forward a future pick (although not likely with BB). Whatever direction BB looks to go I think this is going to be a fun draft.

Just a thought, with what will likely be close to 100 underclassmen in this draft, the potential for a strong UDFA class is high this year. Not something to be forgotten about.

Another interesting underclassman TE to look at could be Nic Jacobs of McNeese State. A former 4 star LSU recruit who played 19 games for the Tigers, mostly as a blocker, before transferring to McNeese for the 2013 season. He was suspended for the last 3 games in 2012 at LSU for 'breaking team rules' and left the program after that, but I can't find an exact reason why. He's got great size at 6'5" 260lbs and is an excellent blocker. He surprised some people with how athletic he was and certainly improved as a receiver in 2013. He could be a really interesting option as a blocking #3 TE.

Troy Niklas is a surprise as a declaring junior. He's a real tight end. 6'6", 270.

Niklas and Gronk together would be amazing. It would essentially give the Pats 7 linemen in 1-2-2 personnel sets, and tremendous red zone capability. Me like.

With Niklas declaring, that makes 4 TE with the potential for first round grades. Since 1980, only once has more than 2 TE been taken in the first round and that was 2002 with three (we were one with Daniel Graham). One or more are going to fall to us if BB plans on spending a first rounder on a TE.

I don't think Niklas is likely to be a 1st round pick, though it's quite possible that he could end up being a fast riser. Day 2 seems pretty likely, and I think he'd be a great pick with our 2nd rounder if he lasted that long. He would provide the capability of an extra lineman as well as a red zone threat.

What's interesting is that Niklas was recruited to Notre Dame as an OL, then moved to defense as a freshman. He played as a LB, and even played some snaps at NT, and was considered a good defensive prospect. It was a surprise when he was switched to TE, especially given that the Irish already had several prospects at the position. So he's only had 2 years at TE, and is still somewhat raw. His experience on the OL and on defense should be an asset.

Here's what Brian Kelly had to say when he moved Niklas to TE:

Multiple reports said Niklas towered over the other tight ends, which is pretty impressive when you consider [Tyler] Eifert is listed at 6-foot-6, [Ben] Koyack at 6-foot-5 and [Alex] Welch and [Jake] Golic 6-foot-4. At what looks like 6-foot-7, and a shredded 250 pounds, Niklas is one of those freakish athletes that will give the Irish plenty of options.

After practice this morning, Kelly discussed what he’s hoping to get from Niklas, who fits a much different profile than the other tight ends on the roster. So much so, that his high school coach compared him to future top NFL pick and former USC left tackle Matt Kalil.

“The first thing that we want him to do is be an in-line blocker for us,” Kelly said of Niklas. “We want to be able to run the ball effectively. We didn’t just put him in there just because he’s 6-7 and we can get a match-up. That’s part of it. We’ve got an athletic tight end in Tyler Eifert. What we were looking for was a bigger body guy that can be a great in-line blocker but can also give us that size element.”

It’s hard not to think of the New England Patriots offense when you consider what Chuck Martin should be able to do with his tight ends. It’s premature to compare Niklas to Rob Gronkowski when he hasn’t caught a pass in college, but the ability to detach Eifert and let him become a gigantic match-up problem with corners and safeties while also having another left tackle-sized tight end on the field gives you some very interesting schematic choices. Kelly, for his part, didn’t shy away from the Patriots comparison.

Niklas also seems to have some solid personal characteristics and intangibles that BB would probably like:

Niklas Leads Helps For Homeless

FWIW, Niklas does have a concussion history that at one point had some worried about his future in football. That will be an issue to be addressed.

Kaneakua Friel is an underrated receiving tight end from BYU. He is my sleeper pick for us.
