Ditto one or more of the DL now on PUP.

And Cannon's spot is needed for a backup tackle.

Beyond that, Pryor/Warren could go either way, and Brown could be upgraded. And I think Wendell is misspelled.

We're all remarkably close in our roster projections

Most of us seem to have roster projections a lot like:

QB 3 Brady, Hoyer, Mallett

RB 4 BJGE, Woodhead, Ridley, Vereen. Faulk to be either on PUP or cut outright. (I say PUP).

TE 3 Gronkowski, Hernandez, Smith/Yeatman. (I say Smith, with Yeatman to the PS.)

WR 6 Ochocinco, Welker, Branch, Price, Edelman, Slater. Some have Tate or a FA over Edelman (or in a few cases Branch).

OT 4 Light, Vollmer, Solder, Levoir/Manieri. Some say only 3 OT, which makes little sense to me.

G/C 5 Mankins, Koppen, Connolly, Wendell, Ohrneberger. Some still hope for upgrades. Cannon on PUP, although some have him on the main roster, which makes no sense for me medically or in terms of readiness to contribute.

K/P/LS 3 Gostowski, Mesko, Katula

CB 5 McCourty, Bodden, Arrington, Dowling, Butler/Wilhite. I go with Butler.

S 4 Chung, Meriweather, Sanders, somebody else. Some think Meriweather or Sanders could be gone, in part for financial reasons. I think the position is in enough flux that they'll be kept.

ILB/classic LB 5 Mayo, Spikes, Guyton, Fletcher, White/some other ST specialist. Some think a spot could be saved letting Guyton go. It's tempting, but I'd guess against it.

3-4 OLB/rush DE 5 Ninkovich, Cunningham, Carter, Anderson, Moore. Some think Moore or even Cunningham will be dispensed with. I disagree, not least because they actually can play OLB. M. Carter is a PS candidate.

3-4 DE/DT/NT 6 Wilfork, Haynesworth, Ellis, Wright, Love, Warren/Pryor. Competition is brutal here, and opinions vary. In my version, Ellis comes off PUP, Brace/Deaderick may well stay on PUP, Richard and Cohen might head to the PS, and one of Warren or Pryor is a tough cut. But it's tough to take these guys up to 7 while cutting the OLB/rush DE types down to 4, when you think about the number of combined reps for each group. I do think stashing youngsters in PUP, PS, IR, whatever is good, given the age and question marks among the main guys, as well as the chance of the scheme sliding back to the usual mix of 3-4.

As usual, to add a head to one group you have to trip one somewhere else.

Also as usual, expect at least one guy to make the roster who isn't mentioned above at all.

I think an interesting exercise for all roster-mockers would be to rank order their roster. For instance:

1) Brady QB

2) Mankins OG

3) Wilfork NT....

51) Butler CB

52) Moore OLB/DE

53) Pryor DT

So that we can get a good idea of where your trade-offs and vertical sort for the roster looks like.

That was just a quick example. I am not deep enough in the weeds to actually get past the top 35 or so.

Reiss and Rodak project the 53

Both have 7 WRs, not wanting to give up Tate's kick returning or potential. No big surprises otherwise, with some differences between them as to which positions to skimp on, and some differences on personnel as well (e.g. Manieri/Levoir (oops), Brown/Lockett).

Change in the roster cut rules

First cut must be down to 80 players, not 75.

Originally, teams were supposed to get down to 75 players on August 30. The NFL announced that number has been raised to 80, presumably to give teams more leeway because of the abbreviated offseason.

This was essentially done so that more players would be available to use and evaluate in the often-useless fourth preseason week.

I suppose it makes sense with teams not having the offseason to look at players, plus training camp rosters being expanded this year. So first round of cuts will be ten players instead of five, reducing roster size to 80 rather than 75. More players cut early, but early roster size remains larger than previously.

So, even allowing for 5 IR or PUP players per team, there will be 700 players waived for the last cut. That's a lot of players suddenly becoming available!

But if we believe the analysis from another thread, our depth is so good that none of these 700 will interest the patriots, except for some of our own that we will try to put on Practice Squad after they pass waivers (which they won't since they are patriot castoffs).

How many have the Pats added in any other year? Off the top of my head it's usually one or two destined for the Practice Squad; the impact that Danny Woodhead made last year is more of an exception rather than the rule to most late free agent additions.

The fact that there are more players being released is insignificant; nobody is interested in those final 160 players that lasted a week later than they would have lasted under the old rules. In previous years 32 teams had to either cut or IR 22 players at the end of training camp; that's still 704 players. I'm not seeing how things will be different this year due to these changes to the rules with training camp cuts.
