The defense is just not good enough says so many in this thread.

Say it is the responsibility of the defense.

First, how many games will we win if we score 16 points per game? Is the defense truly expected to make such an offense a winner?

We are going to score more than 16 points during the season. the dolphins have a really good defense and this was a rookies first game. and he still passed for 74%.

I think its more the spots the defense crumbled in. But make no mistake, this loss was on penalties and the fumbles. we clean those up and we should have beaten the dolphins handily.

Great point. It's all about offense in 2021.

first game for a rookie against a tough defense, i think the patriots played it abit conservative offensively. But Mac jones showed when they opened up the offense abit and let him throw he could get the job done. he threw some dimes on 3rd down.

hopefully as the season goes on and Mac Jones shows he can handle more put on his plate they open it up abit and let him sling it.

I was also expecting more 2 tight end sets. but it doesnt seem like the patriots utilized that much.

If we hold other teams to 15 points, all of them?

You have to almost try to be that bad in terms of scoring offense over a full season in this era.

How many games would an NFL team win if they got to play against Tua Fish every game?
If we didn't fumble, we'd probably win 13, others more. The early Jones fumble cost a FG. The later Harris fumble cost 4-7 and the game.

Pats would have scored more if not for some statistically rare fumbles.. So who cares.
So, the the team continues to be statistically terrible in the red zone, so that's fine?

Let's be clear.

LAST 25 MINUTES OF THE GAME
1) The defense allowed ZERO points.
2) The defense gave the offense field position with an interception.
3) The offense needed to score 8 points in 25 minutes (7 to tie); they scored 6.

So, the the team continues to be statistically terrible in the red zone, so that's fine?
Huh? How do you get that..

Luck plays a factor in sports - so unless you think our running backs are going to fumble in ever attempt in the red zone - we will turn those trips into more points. Stop with the silly pearl clutching..

Accepting a loss because a RB made statistically unlikely fumble is just plain silly, or worse. When a PATRIOT running back makes a statistically unlikely fumble, he is benched. If it at the end of the game, then Bill will have lots for the RB to do during the week.

Fumbles are simply unacceptable, (as are most penalties). The patriot do not accept
losing 3 points on the Jones fumble
losing 4 points on the Wynn penalty, and losing
losing 3-7 points (and the game) on the Harris fumble

That fumbles are statistically unlikely is NO EXCUSE, none at all.

Yes, we lost the red-zone battle to a good MIA defense, that played better than our offense. We have many who we might want to blame. But it was the three errors noted above that lost us 10-14 points.

Is this where people have to explain things like game planning and strategy, opponent talent and styles, and the like? Or can we just consider the obvious as obvious, and say that "it depends on multiple factors"?

You can play the “but this never happens!” game forever, but it’s always one sided. What happened to “it is what it is?” Started last hear with “we could have won four more games!” while ignoring all the close wins and only reversing the close losses.

How many times will you get to face a QB this bad? He handed the game over on a silver platter. One of the worst passes in memory given the game situation.

The Tua pass should have been caught by his receiver.

Who said anything about accepting a loss? Huh? What is with the unrelated comments..

My point was that RB fumbles are statistically fairly rare - especially in the red zone. So with the same players and same coaching against another team its likely we will score more points then that. So why extrapolate out from that game..?

It's like Seth Curry shooting a free throw. Sometimes he is going to miss - but just because he missed in some crucial game - its not likely he will always miss. In reality he is going to make the most of the time. Same with Harris running the ball..

It's not complicated. The GB packers scored 3 points in there game. Do you think people seriously believe they will score only 3 points in every game the rest of the year? LOL. This is dumb concept.. Sample size of one game is going to have incredible variance..

We won't know how good or bad this offense is going to be until a few games into the season - and even then it might progress..
