Drake “The Schedule” Maye

Drake is one of the worst in the league when facing cover 6. Like 31st worst. It’s really slowed the deep ball and rhythm the latter half of the season. He will be back to his old self after he learns how to beat it but it’s no coincidence that teams are playing it as much as they have.

He ranks 1st vs cover 3 and 4 and 6th vs cover 2 so it’s only a matter of time before he figures it out. Belichick used to give Manning fits with disguises and eventually he was able to beat us occasionally after he figured it out. No different here.

Edelman/Amendola

Douglas/Chism

That's a very high expectation, imo. The reason Edelman/Amendola worked is because they both are very high caliber WR's (Amendola never reached the height we wanted after the groin injury, but he was still very, very skilled). It was also second-dynasty Brady running that offense. Brady got Julian nearly a decade into his career.

Douglas and Chism simply aren't that level. And Maye is on year 3.

Stacking the debt as much as I can against myself by continually saying Chism isn't good, in hope that the universe punishes me by making him better than Walker and Edelman.

Against tough defenses like Seattle, that's a great idea.

Edelman/Amendola was an impossible cover on short downs back in the day.

Douglas/Chism would be an impossible cover. Put a field stretcher on the outside and block well.

I don't know if Douglass understands how to play the Slot position; he has an Outside guy's mentality with an Inside guy's body.

I do know that the Chjism Trail won't be following a path outside the hash marks very often: he doesn't have long speed and the QB wouldn't be able to see him downfield anyway.

I really don't see them being on the field at the same time very often.

I'm still with Drake "Drake Maye" Maye... but actual nicknames are conferred then ratified by public opinion, i.e., trends.

In every other fanbase, of course they'll find a way to personalize their religious belief that only a soft schedule explains the Pats' Super Bowl season last year. In our fanbase, of course we allow for what the strength of schedule really shows, but don't look at it as the key to the universe.

So yeah that's fine. Tom Brady is still "the ultimate system quarterback" to some of these guys, and he's the greatest to ever play the game.

The hope is Chism now I'm Done with Pop: he's just not a consistent Receiver. Remember that play he couldn't even swivel his way to get a measley yard. Those are some of the many things I hate about Pop: we Traded the wrong guy. I give a Practice squander a chance to develop over Pop. Kyle Dixon please make some noise in practice.

He does, Drake doesn’t use him nearly enough.

Nobody said anything about outside the hash marks. I was talking about third and short or even goal line.

I don't want to see poor fundamentals and footwork, even if the pass gets completed.

He relies so much on his gifts, it's becoming a hinderance.

Drake needs to play with his head, not his arm. It's not hard to understand down and distance... or protect the ball.

Tom was the least athletic guy on the field at all times during his decades long career.... and he's the greatest of all time.

Drake needs to look like a passing robot like Tom or Andrew Luck, not throwing off his back foot or falling away because he wants to look cool.

Step into throws, throw lasers, or long arcing bombs into the bucket. Don't put the ball where the opponent can get it. No improv just for the sake of it. You don't get style points... all you get is interceptions.

Save the improv for when stuff breaks down. He needs to see pressure before the snap and always have a hot route so he doesn't have to improv. He has to take what the defense is giving him for 4 quarters instead of two or three. He needs to become an expert at his short game. He can already drive the ball deep.
Yes a Patient no mistake Offense is going to be critical on the Road. Both Lawrence and Allen are known to give a couple to the D. We have to take advantage of those: three points is better than none.

He’s led us in WR receptions the last two times we played Seattle. He's being very underutilized, that’s not his fault.

Saying he was injured in the first half makes it sound like he might’ve missed the entire second quarter, maybe more. There’s nothing wrong with specificity.

I forgot when he went down, but my point stands. He missed basically an entire half of football. Maye was decent, not great when Brown was in and played bad when he wasn't. But we don't count that when we talk about sides playing short handed apparently.

Trust me on this Woz: its Chism time I would take s Danny Amendola type player in Chism over Pop the everlasting tease.

Can we call Bo Nix the Schedule too. The Broncos had a cake schedule last year and faced the Chiefs without Mahomes at least once. Did you watch Nix last night?

Pop is reliable, we'll see what Chism is -- odds are, also reliable (not earth-shaking.)

We've seen flashes from Williams, and since it's the hybrid inside/outside guy that went down, expect lots of opportunity there too.

Exactly. It’s the same “SyStIM qUarzterBaK” label that low info fans said about Brady

On the receiving front, they actually did do a decent job of spreading the ball around. Though they kept the game pretty short, especially without Brown in the 2nd half.

Mack Hollins at 12 yds/catch was actually what passed for a deep receiver against Seattle and everyone else was under 10.

That actually bodes well for getting through Brown's absence, as they SHOULD be focused on short to mid-range passes that have a higher catch rate (i.e. using first down for a short pass rather than an average of under 3 yards/run, which is what we saw.

We saw missed opportunities deep that could have/would have been first downs otherwise if Maye can get back to his previous accuracy (having Diggs helped that too) - but they do need to keep Ds honest so I hope we'll see some other players out there who can sneak deep, even if they are small like Pop as we saw him do that last year too.

We don't need to have a big deep game - just enough to keep Ds on guard for a Williams or Douglas or Chism deep catch even just twice a game. Maybe Henderson coming back helps as he's a run and pass threat, and Stevenson as a runner isn't worrying Ds at 2.8 ypc. But the ability to throw deep depends on good protection by the OL - which at this stage might require that we have an extra blocker at TE out there (though Mack is great a blocking too.)

So the raw materials are there for sure - we've got a LOT of receiving threats - so many it's tough to get them on the field at the same time. But Brady himself (and Josh) had great success with the dink and dunk playbook and we need to get back to that.

While Doubs can run any route (and Josh should use him more in different schemes despite the drops) I don't look to him as our deep threat and the door is open for any of the young players still on the roster to grab that role.

He has to play his way out of the nickname. Beat some top tier defenses, show the ability to adjust at the line and make pre snap reads and cut down on the picks.
Seattle is a top 5 d, so he gets a pass on that.

Without AJ, his receivers as a whole are mediocre at best and the running game is not a strength. Drake has a lot on his shoulders.
More expected of him this year…that creates pressure

Nix looked like Maye.

Fumbling, bumbling and stumbling. Nixs first INT was gift wrapped.

Maye is far better than Nix. Always has been.

Nix has been a product of Payton.

And in the first three quarters of the Patriots game, Maye was efficient even though he didn't put up a lot of points or yards. It was the last quarter where he fell apart. NOTE: I am not sure how this chart got 2.4 YPA when he had 127 yards on 22 attempts. That is 5.8 YPA which isn't great, but far better than 2.4.

Nix sucked all night last night. Threw an INT on the first drive and went down from there.

And here is Nix's passing chart from last night. That is nothing like Maye. Nix barely throws past 10 yards in a game. He has always been a low risk thrower and still not nearly as efficient as Maye.

Maye didn't put up gaudy stats the first three quarters because McDaniels ran a conservative gameplan. Payton seemed to be running the same gameplan he usually runs and Nix was just awful from start to finish.
